மஹான்களுக்கு அருளிய மஹாலக்ஷ்மி 

காஞ்சியில் காமாக்ஷி பொன்மழை பொழிந்தது பற்றி மூகர் ‘பஞ்ச சதீ’யில் பாடியிருக்கிறார். (கண்டீக்ருத்ய – ஸ்துதி சதகம்). “துண்டீர தேசத்தில் ஸ்வர்ண வர்ஷத்தைப் பொழிந்தவள்” என்கிறார். துண்டீரம் என்பதே தமிழில் தொண்டை மண்டலம் என்பது. பல்லவர்களின் தலைநகரான காஞ்சியைச் சுற்றிய சீமைக்குத் தொண்டை மண்டலம் என்று பெயர். இப்போதும் இந்தச் சீமையில் பொன் விளைந்த களத்தூர் என்றே ஒர் ஊர் இருப்பது உங்களில் சிலருக்குத் தெரிந்திருக்கலாம்.

அத்வைத ஸ்தாபகாசாரியரான ஸ்ரீ சங்கரருக்காகக் காலடியில் பொன்மழை பெய்த மஹாலக்ஷ்மி, காஞ்சிபுரத்தில் விசிஷ்டாத்வைத ஆசாரியரான ஸ்ரீ வேதாந்த தேசிகனுக்காகவும் பொன்மழை பெய்திருக்கிறாள். வேதங்களின் முடிவான உபநிஷதங்களில் கரை கடந்தவர் என்பதாக, அவரை, ‘நிகமாந்த மஹா தேசிகன்’ என்றே சொல்வார்கள். ‘நிகமாந்த’ என்றாலும் ‘வேதாந்த’ என்றாலும் ஒன்றுதான். ‘ஸர்வ தந்திர ஸ்வதந்திரர்’ என்றும் அவருக்குச் சிறப்பு உண்டு. குதிரை முகம் கொண்ட மஹா விஷ்ணுவான ஹயக்ரீவர் அவருக்குப் பிரத்யட்சம். வடகலை சம்பிரதாயத்திற்கு மூலபுருஷர் அவர். தமக்கென்று திரவியமே வைத்துக் கொள்ளாமல், பிக்ஷை எடுத்துத்தான் ஜீவித்து வந்தார். பெரியவர்களாக யார் இருந்தாலும் அவர்களுக்கு விரோதிகள் இருப்பார்கள். அந்தப் பெரியவரை அவமானப்படுத்திப் பார்க்க வேண்டும் என்று சூழ்ச்சி செய்கிறவர்கள் இருப்பார்கள். ஸ்ரீ வேதாந்த தேசிகருக்கும் இப்படிப்பட்ட விரோதிகள் இருந்தார்கள். ‘ஸர்வதந்திர ஸ்வதந்திரர்’ என்றால் வெளி சகாயம் எதுவும் இல்லாமலே தாமே எதையும் சாதிக்கக்கூடியவராக இருக்க வேண்டும். இந்த தேசிகன் அப்படி எதையும் சாதித்துவிட முடியாது என்று நிரூபித்துவிட வேண்டும். ‘ஸர்வதந்திர ஸ்வதந்திரப் பட்டம் அவருக்குப் பொருந்தாது என்று லோகத்துக்குக் காட்டி மானபங்கப்படுத்த வேண்டும்’ என்று அவருடைய விரோதிகள் நினைத்து, ஒரு சூழ்ச்சி செய்தார்கள்.

பரம ஏழையான ஒரு அசட்டுப் பிராம்மணப் பையன் கல்யாணமே ஆகாமல் ரொம்பவும் கஷ்டப்பட்டுக் கொண்டிருந்தான். பணம், புத்தி இரண்டும் இல்லாதவனுக்கு, யார் பெண் கொடுப்பார்கள்? தேசிகரின் விரோதிகள் இந்தத் தடிமண்டு பிரம்மச்சாரியைக் கொண்டு, அவரை அவமானப்படுத்தி விடலாம் என்று நினைத்தார்கள். இந்தப் பையன் போய் அவரிடம் தனக்குப் பணமுடிப்பு வேண்டும் என்று பிரார்த்தனை பண்ணட்டும். அவரிடமோ திரவியம் இல்லை. இவனுக்காக அவர் பிறத்தியாரையும் யாசிக்கக்கூடாது. ‘ஸர்வதந்திர ஸ்வதந்திர’ என்றால், அவராகவே எப்படியோ இவருக்கு வேண்டிய தனத்தை உண்டாக்கித் தந்துவிட வேண்டும். அவரால் இப்படிச் செய்யமுடியாது. உடனே, “எப்படி ஐயா பெரிய பட்டத்தை வைத்துக் கொள்ளலாம்?” என்று கேட்டு, அவருடைய மானத்தை வாங்கிவிட வேண்டும் என்று திட்டம் போட்டார்கள். அந்தப் பிரகாரமே ஏழைப் பையனை அவர்கள் ஏவினார்கள். ஸ்ரீதேசிகனிடம் பிரம்மச்சாரி போய்த் தன் கல்யாணத்துக்குப் பணம் வேண்டும் என்று யாசித்தான்.

(இதிலிருந்து நான் சொல்ல வந்த விஷயத்துக்கு சம்பந்தமில்லாவிட்டாலும், என் மனஸில் ரொம்பவும் முக்கியமாக உள்ள இன்னொரு விஷயத்துக்கும் ஆதரவு கிடைக்கிறது. அதாவது அவர் காலத்தில் – அதாவது எழுநூறு வருஷங்களுக்கு முந்தி – பிள்ளை வீட்டுக்காரன்தான் பெண் வீட்டுக்குப் பணம் கொடுத்துக் கல்யாணம் பண்ணிக் கொண்டான். வரதக்ஷிணை வாங்குகிற பழக்கம் இல்லை என்று நிரூபணமாகிறது.)

வேதாந்த தேசிகருக்கு இது விரோதிகள் சூழ்ச்சி என்று தெரிந்துவிட்டது. இருந்தாலும், அவர் தன்னை அவமானப்படுத்த வந்தவனிடமும் கருணை கொண்டார். “ஸ்ரீஸ்துதி” என்கிற உத்தமமான ஸ்தோத்திரத்தால் மஹாலக்ஷ்மியைப் பிரார்த்தித்தார். உடனே பொன் மழை பொழிந்தது. அதை பிரம்மச்சாரிக்குக் கொடுத்தார். விரோதிகளால் பெரியவர்களுக்குக் கடைசியில் மேலும் பெருமையே உண்டாகும். தேசிகருக்கும் அப்படிப் பெருமை உண்டாயிற்று. சங்கரர், தேசிகர் இவர்களின் கருணையிலிருந்து வாக்கு மழையாகப் பொழிந்தது; பொன்னும் மழையாகப் பொழிந்தது. அத்வைத ஆசார்யாள், பக்த அநுக்கிரகமாக லக்ஷ்மியை ஸ்தோத்திரம் செய்தார் என்றால், விசிஷ்டாத்வைத ஆசார்யரோ, விரோதிகளின் ஆளாக வந்தவனுக்கும் அநுக்கிரகத்தோடு அதே லக்ஷ்மியை வேண்டினார்.

Mahalakshmi Who Blessed Great Souls

Mookar has sung about KAmAkshi showering gold in his ‘Pancha Sathee’ (Kandeekruthya – Sthuthi sathakam).  He says, “She who showered gold in Thundeekaram”.  Thundeekaram is Thondai Mandalam  in Tamizh. The area around Kancheepuram, the capital of Pallavas, is called Thondai Mandalam.  Some  of  you  might  be  aware  of  a  place  called  ‘Pon  Vilaintha  Kalaththur’  in  this  region.

MahAlakshmi  who  showered  gold  in  answer to Adhi Sankarar’s  prayer,  did  the  same  in  Kancheepuram  for  the  sake  of   Sri  Vedhantha  Desikar,   who   was  VisishtAdhwaitha  AchAryAr. He was called ‘NikamAntha  MahA  Desikan’  because  he  had   mastered  Upanishads.  ‘NikamAntha’ and ‘Vedanta’ both mean the same.  He had also a special title ‘Sarva Thanthira Swathanthirar’.  He  had  Prathyaksha  Dharsanam  of  Hayagreevar,  who  is  none  other  than  MahAVishnu  with  the  face  of  a  horse.  He was the original formulator of ‘Vadakalai SampradhAyA’.  He possessed no wealth and lived by taking Alms.  Generally,  if  there  are  some  great  souls,  there  will  be  some  enemies  for  them.  They  will  try  to  do  some  dirty  tricks  in  order  to  humiliate  those  great  men. Sri VedhAntha  Desikar  also  had  some  adversaries  like  this.  ‘Sarvathanthira  Swathanthirar’  means  that he  should  be  able  to  do or  achieve  anything  by  himself,  without  any  sort  of  help  from  outside.  His  adversaries  wanted  to  prove  that  VedAntha  Desikar  could not  do  anything  by  himself.  They  wanted  to  show  to  the  world,  that  he  did  not  deserve  the  title  ‘Sarvathanthira  Swathanthirar’   and  thus  humiliate  him,  and  so  played  a  trick  on  him.

There  was  a  very  poor  and  stupid  Brahmin  boy,  who  was  struggling  in  life  and  could  not  get  married.  Who  will  give  a  girl  in  marriage  to  a  person  who  has neither  money  nor  intelligence? The  adversaries  of  Desikar  thought  that  they  could  humiliate  him  by  using  this  stupid  poor  Brahmachari.  ‘Let  him  go  and  pray  to  him  for  a  bag  of  money.  He does not have any wealth.  He should not beg others for the sake of this boy.  ‘Sarvathanthra  Swathanthirar  means,  he  should  make  the  money  by  himself.  He cannot do it.  We  will  immediately  question  him, “How  can  you  have  that  big  title?”  And bring him to dishonor.’  This was how they planned.  They sent the poor Brahmin boy to him. The  poor  boy  went  to  Sri  Desikar  and  begged  him  to  give  money  for  his  marriage.

(From  this  I  get  support  for  another  important  thought  of  mine,  though  not  related  to  this  matter.  That  is,  in  his  time,  around 700  years  ago,  The  bridegroom  only  gave  money  to  the  bride’s  family  and  married  her.  It  is  a  proof  that  there  was  no  practice  of  demanding  dowry).

VedAntha  Desikar  knew  immediately  that  this  was  a  trick  played  by  his  adversaries.  But  He  took  kindness  towards  that  boy  who  was  sent  to  humiliate  him.  He prayed to MahAlakshmi with a noble Sthuthi called   ‘Sree Sthuthi’.  Immediately it rained gold.  He gave it to the Brahmachari.  Great men get more honor because of enemies. Desikar’s fame also increased after this. Words poured forth from the kindness of Sankarar and Desikar.  Gold also rained.  While  the  Adhwaitha  AchAryAr  sang  the  Sthuthi  asking   Lakshmi  for  kindness  towards  a  poor  lady,  VisishtAdhwaitha  AchAryAr  sang,  asking  the  same  Lakshmi   for  Anugraham  towards  someone  who  was  sent  by  his  adversaries.
