நம் ஆசார, அநுஷ்டானங்களுக்கு ஏகப்பட்ட சாஸ்திர புஸ்தகங்கள் இருக்கின்றன. ஆனாலும் இதிலே நன்றாகத் கவனிக்க வேண்டிய விஷயம் என்னவென்றால், அந்த கிரந்த கர்த்தாக்கள் அந்தப் புஸ்தகங்களில் இது இது ரூல் என்று எழுதிவைத்ததற்குப் பிறகே அதைப் பார்த்து அப்படியப்படி ஜனங்கள் பண்ணினார்களா, வாழ்ந்து காட்டினார்களா என்றால் அதுதான் இல்லை. அந்த கிரந்த கர்த்தாக்களுக்கும் முன்னாலிருந்தே இந்த ஆசார அநுஷ்டானங்களை அவர்களுடைய பூர்விகர்களும் வாழ்க்கையில் அநுஸரித்துத்தான் வந்திருக்கிறார்கள். அதைத்தான் பின் ஸந்ததியாரை உத்தேசித்துப் புஸ்தகத்தில் எழுதி வைத்தார்கள். அதாவது சாஸ்திரத்தைப் பார்த்து வாழ்க்கை நடத்தவில்லை. வாழ்க்கையில் நடத்தப்பட்டதையே சாஸ்திரத்தில் எழுதினார்கள். மநுஸ்மிருதி முதலான எந்த ஸ்மிருதியைப் பார்த்தாலும் ஸரி, ஆபஸ்தம்ப-ஆச்வலாயன ஸூத்ரங்களைப் பார்த்தாலும் ஸரி, அநேக தர்ம சாஸ்திரங்களில் சிதறிக் கிடக்கும் ரூல்களைத் திரட்டிக் கொடுக்கும் நிபந்தன க்ரந்தங்களைப் பார்த்தாலும் ஸரி அந்த மநுவோ, ஆபஸ்தம்பரோ, ஆச்வலாயனரோ, நிபந்தன க்ரந்தம் பண்ணினவரோ தாங்களாக ஒரு சின்ன ‘ரூல்’ கூடப் பண்ணினதாகச் சொல்லிக் கொள்ளவில்லை; ஏற்கனவே இருக்கிற ரூல்களைத் திரும்பச் சொல்கிறதாகவே ஸ்பஷ்டமாக ஏற்படும். . – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீ சந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகள்
Our Aacharams and their practices are explained in many books. What we need to pay attention here is this: Were the rules first written by the authors? Did the people first read these books and then started practicing the aacharams? No. Much before these authors put the rules down in writing, their ancestors have been practicing these aacharams in their day to day lives. The existing practices were put in writing for the benefit of future generations. In essence, people did not see the sastra books and then practice them in life. The authors wrote down the aacharams that were in practice.
