விஞ்ஞானமும் ஆன்ம நிறைவும்

“வேதாந்தம் உலகமே மாயை என்கிறது. அதனால் உலக வாழ்க்கைக்கு உதவுகிற விஷயங்களில் இந்தியர்களுக்கு அக்கறையே கிடையாது. ஸயன்ஸ், டெக்னாலஜி, வைத்தியம், என்ஜினீயரிங் எல்லாம் மேல் நாட்டிலிருந்துதான் இந்தியாவுக்கு வந்திருக்கிறது” என்று சில வெள்ளைக்காரர்கள் சொல்வதுண்டு. இதுவே உண்மை என்று நம்மவர்களும் நம்பி, “ஏதோ கண்ணுக்குத் தெரியாத ஸ்வாமியையும், ஆத்மாவையும் பற்றித்தான் ஹிந்து சாஸ்திரங்கள் இருக்கின்றன. லோக வாழ்க்கைக்கு உபயோகமாக அவற்றில் ஒன்றும் இல்லை” என்று கண்டனம் செய்வதுண்டு.

உண்மையில் நம்முடைய சாஸ்திரங்களில் இல்லாத ஸயன்ஸ் எதுவுமே இல்லை. நமது புராதன சாஸ்திரங்களையெல்லாம் ஆராய்ந்து பார்த்தால், இந்த உண்மை தெரியும். ஆயுர்வேதத்தை—சரகர், சுச்ருதர் முதலானவர்களின் கிரந்தங்களைப் பார்த்தால், இப்போதைய பெரிய டாக்டர்களும் அதிசயிக்கும்படியான மருத்துவ முறைகளும், ஸர்ஜரி விஷயங்களையும் தெரிந்து கொள்கிறோம். மிகவும் புராதனமான அதர்வண வேதத்திலேயே யுத்தத்தில் உண்டாகும் பல விதமான காயங்களைக் குணப்படுத்தும் மூலிகைகள், சிகிச்சை முறை முதலியவற்றைப் பற்றிச் சொல்லியிருப்பது இப்போது ரொம்பவும் உபயோகமாக இருப்பதாகச் சமீபத்தில் காசி சர்வகலாசாலையில் ஒருத்தர் ஆராய்ச்சி செய்து கண்டு பிடித்திருக்கிறார். என்ஜினீயரிங் டெக்னாலஜியிலும் ஆதியிலேயே அபாரமான திறமையை நம்மவர்கள் காட்டியிருக்கிறார்கள். போஜராஜன் செய்த ஸமராங்கண சூத்திரத்தில் ஆகாய விமானம் உள்படப் பலவிதமான மிஷின்களைச் செய்வதற்கான அடிப்படைத் தத்வங்களை விவரித்திருக்கிறது. சுமார் இரண்டாயிரம் வருஷங்களான ஓர் இரும்பு ஸ்தம்பம் இன்றைக்கும் தில்லி குதுப்மினாருக்குப் பக்கத்தில் துருப்பிடிக்காமல் இருக்கிறது. டாடா தொழிற்சாலை இல்லாமலே இப்பட்டிப்பட்ட பெரிய தூணை எந்த உலையில் (FURNACE) அடித்து உருவாக்கினார்கள் என்று ஆச்சரியப்படும்படி இருக்கிறது. தமிழ்நாட்டிலேயே இப்படிப் பல என்ஜினீயரிங் அற்புதங்கள் இருக்கின்றன. பல நூற்றாண்டுகளான கல்லணை எந்தவிதமான கலவையால் கட்டப்பட்டது என்று இன்றும் புரியவில்லை. ஆவுடையார் கோவில் கொடுங்கையில் பாறாங்கல்லை ஒரு காகிதத்தின் அளவுக்கு மெல்லியதாக இழைத்திருக்கிறார்கள். திருவீழிமிழலை வெளவால் ஒட்டி மண்டபத்தின் பிரம்மாண்டமான வளைவை (ARCH) எந்த ஆதாரத்தில் கட்டியிருக்கிறார்கள் என்று என்ஜினீயரிங் நிபுணர்களும் வியக்கிறார்கள்.

தமிழில் பதினெண் சித்தர்கள் பாடலில் இருக்கிற வைத்திய நுணுக்கங்கள் கொஞ்ச நஞ்சமல்ல.

வான நூலில் (astronomy) நமக்கு இருந்த பாண்டித்தியத்தால்தான் எத்தனையோ ஆயிரம் வருஷங்களாக, இன்று அமாவாசை, இன்று கிரகணம் என்று கொஞ்சம்கூடத் தப்பாமல் பஞ்சாங்கம் கணிக்க முடிந்திருக்கிறது.

எல்லா கலைகளும் சாஸ்திரங்களும், ஸயன்ஸுகளும், பாரத தேசத்தில் நன்றாக வளர்ந்தே வந்திருக்கின்றன. ஆனாலும், இப்போது விஞ்ஞானக் கண்டுபிடிப்புக்களால் அணுகுண்டு போன்ற எத்தனையோ அனர்த்தங்கள் உண்டாகியிருப்பதைப் பார்க்கிறோமல்லவா? இப்படி நேரக்கூடாது என்பதாலேயே, பக்குவமானவர்களுக்கு மட்டும் நம் தேசத்தில் விஞ்ஞான நுணுக்கங்களைச் சொல்லிக் கொடுத்தார்கள். சாதாரண ஜனங்களுக்குப் புரியாத பரிபாஷையில் இந்த சாஸ்திரங்கள் அமைந்திருப்பதற்கு இதுவே காரணம். சித்தர்களின் தமிழ் பாடல்களும்கூட இப்படித்தான் நமக்குப் புரியாத பரிபாஷையில் இருக்கும்.

இப்போது நிபுணர்கள் ஆராய்ச்சி செய்தால், நம் சாஸ்திரங்களிலிருந்து பல விஷயங்கள் தெரிந்து கொள்ளமுடியும். சில சமாச்சாரங்கள் நமக்குப் புரியாமல் இருக்கும். அதற்காக அவற்றை ஒதுக்கிவிடக்கூடாது. நமக்குப் பின்னால் வருபவர்களுக்காவது அது புரியக்கூடும் என்பதால், நமக்குப் புரிகிற சாஸ்திரங்கள், புரியாத சாஸ்திரங்கள் எல்லாவற்றையும் நாம் ரக்ஷித்துக் கொடுக்க வேண்டும்.

மற்ற தேசங்களில் சமீப காலமாகவே இந்த விஞ்ஞான வித்தைகள் வளர்ந்து வந்திருக்கின்றன. நாம் ஆதியில் நமக்கென்றே இருந்த இந்த வித்யா சம்பத்தை மறந்துவிட்டு, மற்றவர்களிடமிருந்து இப்போது கற்றுக் கொள்கிறோம்! இதில் ஒரு முக்கியமான வித்தியாசம், இந்த வித்தைகள் யாவும் பிரம்மவித்தை என்கிற ஆத்ம சிரேயஸுக்கு அநுசரணையாகவே நம் தேசத்தில் வைக்கப்பட்டிருந்தன. வெறும் லௌகிக சௌக்கியத்துக்காகவே அவற்றை உபயோகப்படுத்தி மேல்நாடுகள் உண்டாக்கியிருக்கிற ‘நாகரிக’த்தில் ஆத்மசாந்தி அடியோடு போய்விட்டது. இதை மேல் நாட்டுக்காரர்கள் நன்றாக உணர்ந்திருக்கிறார்கள். விஞ்ஞானத்தின் மூலம் படிப்படியாக நாகரிகத்தில் ஏறி, இப்போது அவர்கள் அதில் உச்ச நிலைக்கு வந்திருக்கிறார்கள். ஆனாலும் இதில் ஆத்ம திருப்தி இல்லை என்று கண்டுகொண்டு நம்முடைய வேதாந்தத்தின் பக்கமும் நம்முடைய பக்திமார்க்கத்தின் பக்கமும் வர ஆரம்பித்திருக்கிறார்கள். நாமோ நம்முடைய லௌகிக வித்தை, ஆத்ம வித்தை இரண்டையும் அலட்சியம் செய்து விட்டு, மற்ற நாட்டவர்கள் அடைந்திருக்கிற இரண்டுங்கெட்டான் நாகரிகத்தைத் தேடி ஓடுகிறோம். அவர்கள் இரும்பு உலகத்திலிருந்து (iron Age) தங்க யுகத்துக்கு (Golden Age)—அதாவது, இருட்டு யுகத்திலிருந்து பிரகாச யுகத்துக்கு—வந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள். நாமோ பிரகாச யுகத்திலிருந்து இருட்டு யுகத்திற்குப் போய்க்கொண்டிருக்கிறோம்! குறைவிலிருந்து அவர்கள் நிறைவுக்குப் போய்க் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள் என்றால், நாமோ நிறைவிலிருந்து குறைவுக்குப் போய்க் கொண்டிருக்கிறோம்.

Science and Fulfillment (of Atman/Soul)

Some  westerners  used  to  say,  “VEdhAnthA  says  that  the  whole  world  is  an  illusion.  Therefore,  Indians  have  no  interest  in  matters  which  help  our  worldly  life.  Science, technology, medicine, engineering, etc. have all come (to India) from western countries only.”  Some  of  us  believe  this  statement  and  condemn  (ourselves)  by   saying,  “Hindu  SAstrAs  deal  only  with  the  invisible  God,  and  soul (Atman).  There  is  nothing  in  it  which  is  useful  to  our  daily  life.”

In  fact,  there  is  no  science  which  is  not  found  in  our  SAstrAs.   We  will  realize  this  truth  if  we  analyze  our  ancient  SAstrAs.  When  we  examine  the  books  by  Charakar  and  Susruthar  on  AyurvEdhA,  we  come  to  know  of  medical  treatments  and   methods  of  surgery  which  are  even  admired  by  today’s  famous  doctors.  Recently,  somebody  from  the  university  of  KAsi has  done  a  research  and  declared  that  treatments  of  wounds  inflicted  during   wars  and   names  of herbs   which  can  cure  those  wounds   have  been  mentioned   in  the  ancient  Atharvana  VEdhA,  which  have  been  found  very  useful.  Even  in  Engineering  technology,  our  people  have  shown  their  excellence  from  the  very  beginning.  In  the  SamarAngana SUtrA (theory)  written  by king  BOjarajan,  fundamental  principles  for  the  building  of  airplanes  and  various  other  machineries   have  been  explained.  The  steel  pillar  near  Qutub Minar in  Delhi  which  is  two  thousand  years  old  has  not  rusted  till  today.  We  are  amazed  in  what  sort  of  furnace  such  a  huge  steel  pillar  has  been  melted  and  cast,  when  Tata  Steel Co. was not  existent! There are many such engineering marvels even in Tamizhnadu.  No  one  has  understood    by  using   what  sort  of  mortar  mixture  the  centuries-old  dam  Kallanai  has  been  built.  In  the  cornice  in  AvudaiyAr  temple,  a  granite  stone  has  been  planed  and  polished  to  the  thickness  of  a  paper! Engineering  experts  are  wondering  how   the  huge  arch  in  the  Mantap  of  Thiruveezhimizhalai  temple  has  been  built.

The  minute  details  on  medicine  found  in  the  poems  of  ‘PathinensidhdhA’s  (eighteen  SidhdhAs)  are  countless.

Because  of  the  proficiency  we  had  in  Astronomy,  for  thousands  of  years,  we  have  been  able   to  calculate  the precise  time  and  date  of  new  moon  and  eclipses  and  prepare  the  Almanac.

All arts, SAstrAs, and sciences were well developed in our BhAratham.  But    today we are witnessing the development of disastrous weapons like atom bombs.  In  order  that  such  a  situation  should  not  come  about  only,  our  ancestors  taught  the  intricacies  of  science  only  to  those  who  had  a  well  developed  maturity.  This  is  the  reason  why  these  SAstrAs  have  been  written  in  languages  which  ordinary  people  could  not  understand.  Even  the  songs  by  SidhdhAs  will  be  in  parlances  that  cannot  be  understood  by  us.

If  experts  do  some  research  now,  many  things  can  be  understood  from  SAstrAs.  We may not be able to understand some matters. We should not discard them because of this. As  it  is  possible  for  some  people  to  understand  them  in  future  we  should  protect  these  SAstrAs  and  keep  them  intact.

In  recent  times,  these  scientific  discoveries  have  developed  well  in  other  countries.  But  we  have  forgotten  this  knowledge  treasure  which  was  with  us  from  the  beginning  and  have  started  learning  from  others! There is an important difference here.  In  our  country,  this  knowledge (VidhyA)   has  been   kept     as  ‘Brahma  VidhyA’,  purely  for  the  purpose  of  the  welfare  of  the  soul.  The  new  culture  created  by  the  western  countries  which  uses  this  knowledge  bank   only   for  the  purpose  of  worldly  pleasures has  destroyed  the  ‘Atma  ShAnthi’ (Peace  for  the  soul).  The westerners have realized this truth well.  They  have  risen  steadily  in  the  new  culture  and  have  reached  the  peak.  But,  having  realized  that  there  is  no  ‘Atma  ShAnthi’  in  this  (new  culture)   they  have  started  coming  towards  the  ‘path  of  VEdhaA’  and  the  ‘path  of  Devotion’.  But  we  have  ignored   both  our  material  knowledge  and  ‘Atma  VidhyA’,    and  are  running  towards  the  new  ‘neither—good—nor—bad’  culture  of  the  western  countries.  They  are  coming  from  the  iron  age    to  the  golden  age—-that  is  from  the  dark  age  to  the  bright  age—-while  we  are  going  from  the  bright  age  to  the  dark  age !  While  they  are  going  from  deficit  to   fullness  or  abundance,  we  are  going  from  fullness  to  deficit.
