தாக்ஷிண்யத்துக்காக principle -ஐ (கொள்கையை) விட்டுவிட்டார்கள் என்று அர்த்தமில்லை. ஆசார அநுஷ்டானத்தில் நாம் எத்தனை நம்பிக்கை வைத்திருந்தாலும் இம்மாதிரி அவை ரொம்ப சிரம ஸாத்யமாகிற போது மாத்திரம் பகவானே கருணையினால் அவற்றை ‘ஓவர்லுக்’ பண்ணி விடுவான்; சிரமதசை முடிந்த பிற்பாடு நாம் அவற்றை உரியபடி அநுஷ்டிக்கத்தான் வேண்டும் என்பதே தாத்பரியம். குறிப்பிட்ட சில ஸமயங்களில் சில ஆசாரங்களைத் தளர்த்திக் கொடுத்திருக்கிறது என்பதனால் அதையே எக்காலத்துக்கும் நடைமுறையாக்கிக் கொண்டு விடக்கூடாது. ஒன்று முடியாதபோது அதற்குப் பதிலாக (substitute-ஆக), இரண்டாம் பக்ஷமாக (secondary-யாக) இன்னொன்றைச் சொல்லியிருக்கும். இதற்கு ‘கௌணம்’ என்று பெயர். ‘கௌண’ ஆசாரத்தையே மூலமான ‘முக்ய’ அல்லது ‘ப்ரதான’ விதிக்குப் பதில் எப்போதும் அநுஷ்டிப்பதென்பது முறையாகாது. ‘முக்ய விதி’, ‘பிரதான விதி’ என்பது ஜெனரல் ரூல். ‘கௌண விதி’ என்பது Subsidiary Rule. – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீ சந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள் மொழிகள்

Exemptions to the rules of Aacharam do not mean that people have given up their principles of Aacharam out of certain consideration to the others. However intense may be our faith in the observances of Aacharam, in such circumstances where the observance of aacharam becomes very difficult, God will overlook such deviations out of compassion. The understanding is that after the difficult circumstances come to an end, we should observe these rules of conduct again. Just because the scriptures give some relaxations under certain circumstances, these exemptions cannot be made the general rule. Sometimes when it is not possible to observe a certain rule, an alternative would have been given. This is called ‘Kownam’.  But it is not always correct to observe this alternative rule instead of the ‘Pradhaana’ or the original ‘Mukya’ rule. ‘Mukya” or ‘Pradhaana Vidhi’ is general rule and ‘Kowna vidhi’ is the subsidiary rule. – Jagadguru Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Swamigal
