ஒழுக்கம் என்பதே ஆசாரம்; அது உள்குணம், வெளிநடத்தை, வெளிச் சின்னம் எல்லாம் அடங்கியது என்று சொன்னேனல்லவா? இந்த ஆசாரத்தைப் பற்றியொழுகுவது பற்றி “ஒழுக்கம் உடைமை” என்று திருவள்ளுவர் திருக்குறளில் ஒரு அதிகாரம் (பத்துக் குறள்கள்) பண்ணியிருக்கிறார், அதை ஜெனரலாக, எல்லாருக்கும் ‘அப்ளை’ ஆவதாகத்தான் ஆரம்பித்துக்கொண்டு போகிறார். ஒழுக்கந்தான் மநுஷ்யனுக்கு உயர்வைத் தருவது; அதனால் பிராணனைவிட முக்யமானதாக ஒழுக்கத்தை, ஆசாரத்தை, ரக்ஷிக்க வேண்டும் என்று முதல் குறளில் சொல்கிறார். அப்புறம் [மூன்றாவது குறளில்] உயர்ந்த ஒழுக்கமுள்ளவனே உயர்குடி, அதாவது உயர் ஜாதிக்காரன்; ஒழுக்கம் கெட்டவன் தாழ்பிறப்புக்காரன் என்று அவர் சொல்வதைப் பார்த்தால் ஒருவனுடைய குணத்தையும் நடத்தையையும் வைத்துத்தான் ஜாதியே தவிர, பிறப்பினாலே அல்ல என்ற இக்கால அபேத வாதம் மாதிரித் தோன்றுகிறது. ஆனால் இப்படியில்லை என்று ஸ்பஷ்டமாகக் காட்டுகிற மாதிரியே அடுத்த குறளைப் பண்ணியிருக்கிறார்கள்.

மறப்பினும் ஓத்துக் கொளலாகும் பார்ப்பான்

I had stated earlier that virtue is Aacharam and it includes character, conduct, and external symbols. Thiruvalluvar has composed ten Kurals on this Aacharam in the section (adhigaram) titled ‘Ozhukkam Udaimai’- (the possession of virtue). He commences it in such a way that it is applicable generally to everyone. In the first Kural he states that virtue exalts a person and hence it should be cherished more than one’s life force itself. In the third Kural he states that a virtuous person belongs to a superior caste and an immoral person belongs to a lower caste. At first glance, he may seem to resemble the modern reformist who states caste arises out of conduct and not birth.
