Periyava Nama Yagnam – My experience

Periyava Nama-3

Thanks to Sai for posting about this whole initiative few weeks back. Click here to read. Even before Sai posted this, I came to know about this idea from Sri Kumar, Vignesh Studios. While I know that this is a great idea, I wasn’t sure how impactful this would be until I visited India.

Vignesh Studio is on the same street as my parents’ place. So, almost every time, I stepped outside, I make a quick halt at the studio, chat with Kumar about Periyava and go. On the first day, he handed me these notebooks etc. I saw them – it was very nicely planned and printed. I took it home.

While I was visiting his studio at often times, invariably I see someone coming and asking for these notebooks. I was quite surprised and saw one teenage boy asking for this. When Kumar said that he is out of stock, that kid was quite disappointed. It was a very pleasant moment to witness. While other teenagers are busy in finding which girls school bus go where and at what time (pun intended!), this boy is deep in Periyava bakthi. That is when I realized that this book has been making good impact with younger generation also. Kumar has plans and  looking for some volunteers to distribute these in Hindu mission schools etc so that we could get the next generation into Periyava bakthi…

I asked Kumar on more details on this initiative and how it was received by devotees. It seems that people are so eager to get these books to write Periyava Nama….Whatever the number of books are printed they all get distributed right away.  Lots of school kids are asking for these notebooks. Also thatha and paatis have also started writing these namas….It is becoming a big movement.

There are 4 types of NAMA books available in languages like, English, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi for writing. The NAMAS are:

1. Periyava
2. Periyava Padam Saranam.
3. Periyava Padame Gadhi
4. All the above 3 NAMAs together.

At a high-level when you look at these namas, they may look like normal words. I went home and started writing one of the books. That is when I realized how powerful each Nama is – particularly when you write “Periyava Padame Gadhi”  or “Periyava Padam Saranam” – your heart absorbs the real meaning….At least to me, it made a big impact. I was completely absolved in those namas during the whole time I wrote. Quite honestly, I did not realize that it would be that impactful.

Earlier, he had plans to give a silver coin for writing certain books for certain numbers etc. Now to make it easier, it has been decided to give a silver coin for completing any 10 books – doesn’t matter in which combination. These silver coins are kept at the adishtanam and blessed by both Periyavas for distribution.

Orinai mani mandapam trust has been encouraging this effort and exploring the possibilities of having a place to store all these Nama notebooks where one could even do a pradakshinam of them.

I wish there is some way to get more books sent to US so that we could distribute to all devotees. The cost of bringing those books are high….Still, we will explore how we can do that….

Needless to say, this is one of the best ways to be in Periyava smaranai. There are 6-7 places where these notebooks are distributed – given below..I encourage all devotees to join this movement. Recently I saw a video clipping where HH Pudhu Periyava reading the front-page of this notebook…

One big disappointment for me – while busy packing my bags on the day I left, I accidentally left my notebooks at my parents place 🙁 I will explore a way to get few books through someone who come to Chicago…..

Periyava Paadame Gadhi!

Hara Hara Sankara Jaya Jaya Sankara!

  1. Wonderful initiative and plan. Sri PeriyavA Padma Paadham Saranam.

  2. I am not sure this is something we should encourage.

Though it is bhakti which is something Bhagavan Krishna espoused , We have Siva and Rama and Krishna nama which have come down to us through generations. When we introduce new things because they captivate us though they have no sanctions in ever flowing Dharma we do disservice to our salvation or liberation and misguide others And harm the very practise that we all think we support by these actions.

Why add new stuff when there are sufficient tools in our existing practise? It is same as asking why keep building new temples when we have old dilipated temples needing our attention?

    • Sorry to say I don’t agree. I believe people who are suffering with some problems in their life need solutions for it. Whoever or from wherever we get it what is the harm in it. Person who undergoes problems he wants to come out of it at any cost. Whoever gives us “Vimochana” from it Accept them. As simple as that.

  3. Jaya Jaya Sankara Hara Hara Sankara. Janakiraman. Nagapattinam

  4. Very very excellent. Maha periyava charanam

  6. Great initiative. It is very evident that Mahaperiava’s influence on younger generation and people of different walks of life is phenomenal. One should see the kinds of devotees assembled in front of His Adhishtanam each hour. Amazing. It is our great fortune that we could have His dharshan in physical form till 8th January 1994 and thereafter in the Adhishtanam. The atmosphere there is always fully charged. Sri Kumar of Vignesh Studios has been greatly blessed when Mahaperiava allowed him to take some of the finest and ever appealing photos. Now he wants to celebrate his blessings through this initiative. Well done Sri Kumar.

  7. All shlokas contain phalasruthi at the end which pray for both materialistic and spiritual prosperity. Many veda mantras too pray for material prosperity. Our dharma places emphasis on all the 4 purusharthas and IMHO the silver coin is a nice incentive to initiate children and elders into Periyava bhakti.
Getting started is key. As bhakti matures, we will ourselves focus on spiritual growth and reduce materialistic prayers.

  8. One question. Could we write it on any notebooks? I know best is to write in the books distributed. However as the courier facilities are not available ( checked with the phone number that was provided). I thought I would start writing in any notebooks. I should ask someone to get it to me till that time I did not want to make my mind sit idle. Hope it should be fine:-)
    Regards Arthi

    • Yes you are at Liberty to Do it as you Please. As and when you handed over the nama books (After Completing One Lakh Namas) You Pay Some Contribution to Orikkai Manimandapam Project Either By Kind or Cash. (Kumar Vignesh Studio 9444325344)

      • Thank you very much!!! because of Vignesh studio, Sri kumar we see Periyava during all important days Anusham moolam etc by live telecast. We are very grateful to you. Now, Periyava nama!! my happiness has no bounds.Let Periyava bless you immensely!
        Periyava padamey gathi.
        Kind regards
        Arthi

  9. Writing Periyava Nama may give peace of mind and happiness to any one as long as one is able to completely experience Periyava’s Grace. Please don’t introduce a gift like ‘Silver Coin’ for those who complete so many namas.. The moment you set a materialistic target for a spiritual goal, people lose sight of the goal but land up achieving materialistic goals, there by losing the whole purpose of the Spiritual Journey towards ones own Atma.

    • Really? I don’t know if you are aware not not, Mahaperiyava used to give silver coins for those who write Rama nama for a very very very long time….How would you comment that?
