எப்படியானாலும் ஸரி, எந்த இடத்தில் எந்த மதத்தில், கிளை மதத்தில், ஒருவன் பிறந்திருந்தாலும் அந்த இடத்திலிருந்த அந்த மதத்து, கிளை மதத்து, பூர்விகப் பெரியவர்கள் எப்படிப்பட்ட வாழ்முறையை, வாழ்க்கை நெறியை ஏற்படுத்திக் கொண்டிருந்தார்களோ, அதுவே தனக்கான ஆசாரம் எனக் கொண்டு பின்பற்ற வேண்டும். இப்படி அவனவனும் தன்னுடைய மூதாதைகள் போன வழியில்தான் போக வேண்டும்; இல்லாவிட்டால் அவன் பதிதனாகி விடுகிறான் என்று சொல்லியிருக்கிறது.

A person should follow the traditions and way of life followed by his ancestors who belonged to the religion (or a particular branch of religion) and region he had been born into. He should strictly adhere to the path set out by his ancestors, otherwise, the sastras declare, he spiritually degrades himself.

How the hair should be grown? Muslims tonsure their heads. Sikhs grow their hair and beards. Christians sport a crop. It has been decreed by the Saastraas that Hindus should have a tuft-it is a prescribed religious practice. There are also many differences among the kinds of tufts (Kudumi) that a Hindu grows. It varies from sect to sect. The tufts grown by the Chozhiars, Namboothris, Chidambaram Dikshithars and others vary. Some knot it on the top of their heads, some do so on the front.
