ஜெய ஜெய சங்கர ஹர ஹர சங்கர !   மஹா பெரியவர் – எஸ். ரமணி அண்ணா                                                           “மஹா பெரியவரின் மந்திர கடிகாரம் !”

ஒரு முறை பரிவாரங்களுடன் திருநெல்வேலி செல்லும் வழியில் புதுக்கோட்டையில் முகாமிட்டுருந்தார் காஞ்சி ஆச்சார்யாள். மெயின் ரோட்டில் இருந்த ஒரு பெரிய சத்திரத்தில் தங்கி இருந்தார். அங்கு வந்து சேர்ந்த அன்று இரவு, ஸ்ரீ சந்திரமௌலீச்வர பூஜையை முடித்து விட்டு அமர்ந்திருந்தார் ஸ்வாமிகள்.

தனக்குப் பணிவிடை பண்ணும் நாகராஜன் என்ற இளைஞனை அருகில் அழைத்து, “அப்பா நாகு…நாளைக்கு விடியகாலம்பற மூணரை மணிக்கெல்லாம் நான் எழுந்து ஸ்நானம் பண்ணி ஆகணும். நீ ஞாபகம் வெச்சுக்கோ” என்று கட்டளை இட்டார் ஆச்சார்யாள்.

உடனே அந்த இளைஞன் நாகு மிக அடக்கத்துடன், “உத்தரவு பெரியவா. நீங்க ஆக்ஞாபித்தபடியே  சரியா மூணரைக்கு, ‘ஹர ஹர சங்கர…ஜெய ஜெய சங்கர’ னு நாமாவளி கோஷம் பண்ணறேன் பெரியவா” என பவ்யத்துடன் தெரிவித்துக் கொண்டான்.

பெரியவா புரிந்து கொண்டு, லேசாகப் புன்னகைத்தபடியே, “மூணரை மணிக்கு ஒங்களை எழுப்பி விட்டுடறேன்னு சொன்னா அவ்வளவா நன்னா இருக்காதுங்கறதாலே, “ஹர ஹர சங்கர ஜெய ஜெய சங்கர’ னு சொல்லி எழுப்பறேங்கறியாக்கும்” என்று நாகுவைப் பார்த்து பளிச்சென்று கேட்டார். நாகு அசட்டுச் சிரிப்பு சிரித்தான். என்ன பதில் சொல்வது என்று அவனுக்குப் புரியவில்லை.

“சரி..சரி. அப்டியே பண்ணு !” என்று கூறி விட்டு, உள்ளே சென்று விட்டார் ஆச்சார்யாள். இரவு மணி பதினொன்று. சத்திரம் உறக்கத்தில் ஆழ்ந்தது. பெரியவாளும் சயனத்துக்குச் சென்று விட்டார். நாகுவுக்குத் தூக்கமே வரவில்லை. கவலை அவனைத் தொற்றிக் கொண்டது. அந்தச் சத்திரத்தில் சுவர்க் கடிகாரமோ, அலாரம் டைம்பீசோ இருக்கவில்லை. மடத்திலும் இல்லை. நாகுவிடம் இருப்பதோ அவனுடைய மாமா, ‘பூணூல்’ கல்யாணத்தில் பரிசளித்த ரொம்பப் பழைய வாட்ச் ஒன்று தான். பெரியவாள் உடனேயே எப்போதும் இருக்க வேண்டி உள்ளதால், அதையும் கையில் கட்டிக் கொள்வதில்லை. அது நாகுவின் பழைய டிரங்க் பெட்டிக்குள்ளேயே அடைக்கலமாகி இருக்கும். ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் நாகு அதற்கு ‘கீ’  கொடுக்க எடுத்துப் பார்ப்பதோடு சரி…அப்புறம் தொடுவதில்லை.

‘தானும் படுத்துத் தூங்கி விட்டால் விடியக் காலம் மூணரைக்குப் பெரியவாளை எப்படி எழுப்ப முடியும் ?’ என்ற விசாரம் நாகுவைத் தொற்றிக் கொண்டது. இறுதியாக ஒரு முடிவுக்கு வந்தவன், நேராகப் ஸ்டார் ரூமுக்குப் போனான். டிரங்க் பெட்டியைத் திறந்து கைக்கடிகாரத்தை எடுத்துக் கொண்டான். நேராக ஸ்வாமிகள் சயனித்திருக்கும் அறைக்கு வெளியே சந்தடி இன்றி வந்து அமர்ந்தான். சத்தம் துளிக் கூட வெளியில் கேட்காமல் விஷ்ணு சஹஸ்ரநாமத்தைப்   பாராயணம் பண்ண ஆரம்பித்து விட்டான். திரும்பத் திரும்பப் பாராயணம் செய்து கொண்டிருந்தான். தனது கடிகாரத்தைப் பார்த்தான். மணி சரியாக 3.30 . நாகு எழுந்தான். கண்களைத் துடைத்துக் கொண்டான். கைகளைக் கட்டிக் கொண்டு, ஸ்வாமிகள் சயனிக்கும் அறையைப் பார்த்தபடியே, சன்னமான குரலில், ‘ஹர ஹர சங்கர…ஜெய ஜெய சங்கர..’ என நாமாவளி கோஷம் எழுப்பினான். சற்று நேரத்திலேயே அறைக் கதவு திறந்தது. சாட்சாத் ஸ்ரீ பரமேஸ்வரனே நடந்து வருவது போல சிரித்தபடியே மந்தகாசத்துடன் வெளிப்பட்டு, ‘சுப்ரபாத’ தரிசனம் அளித்தார் ஆச்சார்யாள். அந்த தரிசன பாக்கியம் அன்று நாகுவுக்கு மட்டுமே கிடைத்தது.

ஆச்சார்யாள், அந்த சத்திரத்து வாசற்படி வரை மெதுவாக நடந்து போய் விட்டு வந்தார். ஸ்நானத்துக்கு ஏற்பாடு செய்ய விரைந்தான் நாகு. சத்திரம் விழித்துக் கொண்டது.
அடுத்த நாளும், அதற்கு அடுத்த நாளும் அதே மாதிரியே நாகுவின் விஷ்ணு சஹஸ்ரநாம பாராயணம், ஹர ஹர சங்கர…ஜெய ஜெய சங்கர…நாம கோஷம் எனத் தொடர்ந்தது.

நான்காவது நாள் இரவு, ‘தன் இடுப்பில் கைக் கடிகாரத்தைச் செருகிக் கொண்டு ஸ்வாமிகளின் அறைக்கு வெளியே விஷ்ணு சஹஸ்ரநாமப்  பாராயணம் செய்தபடியே விழித்துக் கொண்டிருந்த நாகு, தன்னையும் அறியாமல் கண் அயர்ந்து விட்டான். திடீர் என்று, ‘ஹர ஹர சங்கர…ஜெய ஜெய சங்கர…’ என்று ஒரு தெய்வீகக் குரல் நாகுவைத் தூக்கத்தில் இருந்து எழுப்பி விட்டது. தூக்கி வாரிப் போட்டபடி எழுந்தான். எதிரே, கருணை ததும்பச் சிரித்த முகத்துடன் ஆச்சார்யாள்.

ஸ்வாமிகள் வாத்ஸல்யத்துடன், “கொழந்தே, மணி சரியா மூணரை ஆறதுடாப்பா. அசதிலே நீ தூங்கிப் போயிட்டே போலிருக்கு. பாவம்..நோக்கும் நாள் பூரா கைங்கர்யம். சரீர சிரமம் இருக்குமோனோ ?” என்று சிரித்தபடியே கூறிவிட்டு, வாசற்புறம் நோக்கி மெதுவாக நடந்தார். இடுப்பில் செருகி இருந்த கைக் கடிகாரத்தை எடுத்துப் பார்த்தான் நாகு. மணி சரியாக 3.30  .

மிகவும் ஆச்சர்யப்பட்டான் நாகு. ‘நாம குரல் கொடுக்காமலே எழுந்து வந்து ‘மணி மூணரை’ னு சரியாச் சொல்லறாளே பெரியவா !

இது எப்படி சாத்தியம் என்று மிகவும் குழம்பினான். அவன் காதுகளில் ‘ஹர ஹர சங்கர…ஜெய ஜெய சங்கர…’ என்ற அந்த நடமாடும் தெய்வத்தின் தெய்வீகக் குரல் மீண்டும் மீண்டும் ஒலித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தது. இது வரை அவன் அப்படிக் கேட்டதே இல்லை.

அன்றிரவு பதினோரு மணி. பெரியவா, சயனத்துக்குச் சென்று விட்டார். ‘எப்படியும் இன்று இரவு கண்ணயரவே கூடாது’ என்று திட வைராக்கியத்துடன் ஸ்வாமிகளின் அரை வாசலில் வந்தமர்ந்தான் நாகு. கையோடு ஒரு சிறிய பித்தளை செம்பில் ஜலம். ஒரு வேளைஅசதியின் மிகுதியால் தூக்கம் வந்து விட்டால் கண்களைத் துடைத்துக் கொள்ளவே ஜலம்.

இரவு மணி 2 .30 . அது வரை தூங்காமல் தாக்குப்பிடித்து  விட்டான் நாகு. ஆனால் தொடர் விஷ்ணு சஹஸ்ரநாம பாரயணத்தையும்   மீறி அவனுக்குத் தூக்கம் வந்து விட்டது. தன்னையும் அறியாமல் கிழே சுருண்டு படுத்தான். உறங்கி விட்டான்.

கதவு திறந்தது. ஆச்சார்யாள் மெதுவாக வெளியே வந்தார். உறங்கிக் கொண்டிருந்த நாகுவைப் பார்த்தார்; அவனுக்குப் பக்கத்தில் இருந்த செம்பையும் பார்த்தார். புரிந்து கொண்டார். சிரித்தார்.

“ஹர ஹர சங்கர…ஜெய ஜெய சங்கர…நாகு…எழுந்துறாப்பா” என மிருதுவாகக் குரல் கொடுத்தார் ஆச்சார்யாள். தூக்கி வாரிப் போட்டபடி எழுந்தான் நாகு. எதிரே புன் முறுவலுடன் பெரியவா.

“நாகு, மணி சரியா மூணரை. பாவம்…இன்னிக்கும் முடியாம தூங்கிட்டே போலிருக்கு. சரி…சரி…ஸ்நானத்துக்கு ஏற்பாடு பண்ணு” என்று சொல்லி விட்டு, வழக்கப்படி வாசற்புறம் நோக்கி மெதுவாக நடந்தார் ஸ்வாமிகள். தனது கடிகாரத்தைப் பார்த்தான் நாகு. சரியாக மூணரை. வியந்து நின்றான். அன்று மதியம் பூஜையை முடித்து விட்டு, ஏகாந்தமாக அமர்ந்திருந்தார் ஆச்சார்யாள். மெதுவாக அவரருகே வந்து நமஸ்கரித்து விட்டு எழுந்து நின்றான் நாகு. வாய் திறந்து அவன் ஒன்றும் பேசவில்லை.

ஸ்வாமிகளே பேசினார், “ஏண்டாப்பா நாகு…நீ நமஸ்காரம் பண்ணிட்டு நிக்கறதைப் பாத்தா, ஏதோ எங்கிட்டே கேட்டு தெருஞ்சுக்க வந்துருக்காப்லே படறதே. என்ன தெரியணும் ? கேளு…சங்கோஜப்படாதே.”

நாகு மிகவும் தயங்கினான். “அதெல்லாம் ஒண்ணுமில்லை பெரியவா…” என்று இழுத்தான். உடனே ஸ்வாமிகள் புன்முறுவல் பூத்தபடியே, “ஒம் மனுசுலே என்ன கேக்க நெனச்சுண்டு நீ தயங்கறேங்கறது நேக்குப் புரியறது. ‘ரெண்டு நாளா நாம தூங்கிப் போயிடறோமே…பெரியவா எப்டி அவ்வளவு கரெக்டா மூணரைக்கு எழுந்துண்டு வர்றார் ? அவர் கிட்டே தான் ஒரு கடிகாரமும் இல்லியே…எப்படி முழுச்சுக்கரார்னு’ னு கொழம்பிண்டிருக்கே…இல்லியா ?” என்று கேட்டார்.

நாகுவுக்குத் தூக்கி வாரிப் போட்டது. நாம் கேட்க நினைத்ததைப் பெரியவா சொல்கிறாரே என்று மலைத்தான்.

நாகுவுக்கு இப்போது தைரியம் வந்து விட்டது. “ஆமா பெரியவா…என்னன்னே தெரியலே. ரெண்டு நாளா என்னையும் அறியாம தூங்கிப் போயிடறேன். பெரியவா தான் சரியா மூணரை மணிக்கு  எழுந்து வந்து என்னையும் எழுப்பி விடறேள். நேக்கே ரொம்ப வெக்கமா இருக்கு. சரியா மூணரை மணிக்கு எப்படிப் பெரியவாளுக்கு…” என்று நாகு முடிப்பதற்குள்…

ஸ்வாமிகள், “ஏதாவது கர்ண யக்ஷிணி (காதில் வந்து சொல்லும் தேவதை) காதுலே மணிய சொல்றதானு சந்தேகம் வந்துடுத்தோ  நோக்கு ?” என்று கேட்டு விட்டு இடி இடி என்று சிரித்தார்.

“அப்படியெல்லாம் ஒண்ணுமில்லே பெரியவா. தெரிஞ்சுக்கணும்னு ஒரு ஆர்வம்…பெரியவா” என்று தயங்கித் தயங்கிச் சொன்னான் நாகு.

பெரியவா சொல்ல ஆரம்பித்தார், “எங் காதுலே ஒரு யஷிணியும் வந்து சொல்லலே. எங் காதுலே மணி மூணரைங்கறதைச் சொன்னது ஒரு பஸ். அதுவும் மதுரை டி.வி.சுந்தரம் ஐயங்காரோட டி.வி.எஸ். பஸ். ஆச்சரியப்படாதே. மொத நாள் சரியா மூணரைக்கு நீ, ‘ஹர ஹர சங்கர…” சொல்லி எழுப்பி விட்டே. வெளியிலே வந்தே நான், வாசப் பக்கம் வந்தேனா…அப்போ ஒரு பஸ் சத்திர வாசலைக் கடந்து டவுன்குள்ளே போச்சு.

அடுத்தடுத்து ரெண்டு நாளும் பார்த்தேன். அதே மூணரைக்கு அந்த பஸ் சத்திர வாசலைக் தாண்டித்து. அப்புறமா விசாரிச்சேன். அது டி.வி.எஸ். கம்பெனியோட பஸ். மதுரைலேர்ந்து புதுக் கோட்டைக்கு விடியக் காலம் வர மொத பஸ்ஸுனும் சொன்னா…சத்திர வாசலுக்கு அந்த பஸ் விடியக் காலம் சரியா மூணரைக்கு வந்து தாண்டிப் போறது. ஒரு செகண்ட்…இப்படி அப்படி மாறல்லே. டி.வி.எஸ். பஸ் ஒரு எடத்துக்கு வர குறிப்பிட்ட டயத்த வெச்சுண்டே, நம்ம கடிகாரத்த கரெக்ட் பண்ணி டயம் வெச்சுக்கலாம்னு சொல்லுவா. அது வாஸ்தவம் தான். மூணு நாள் சரியா பார்த்து வெச்சுண்டேன். நாலாம் நாள்லேந்து அந்த பஸ்ஸோட சத்தம் கேட்ட ஒடனேயே தான எழுந்துட்டுண்டேன்…வேற ஒரு ரகசியமும் இதுலே இல்லேடாப்பா நாகு…!” பெரியவா தன்னை மறந்து சிரித்தார்.

பதில் சொன்ன ஆச்சார்யாளின் முகத்தையே மெய் மறந்து பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருந்தான் நாகு.

Maha Periyava’s Magic Clock

Once when we were travelling to Tirunelveli, Periyava was camping at Pudukottai. He was staying in a Chathiram (Choultry) on the Main road. On the night of His arrival, He was sitting after completing His usual Chandramouleeswara Pooja.

He called His aide Nagarajan and said “Nagu, I need to wake up at 3:30 am tomorrow and bathe. Remember that”.

Nagu replied with modesty, “Just like you said, at 3:30 am tomorrow, I will say Hara Hara Shankara, Jaya Jaya Shankara”

Periyava understood and with a smile said, “Since it will not be good if you say that you will wake me up at 3:30 am, are you saying you will say Hara Hara Shankara, Jaya Jaya shankara?”. Nagu grinned and did not know what to answer.

“Ok. Ok. Do like that.”, Periyava told Nagu and went inside. It was 11 0 Clock in the night and all the people in the Chathiram were sound asleep. Nagu could not sleep that night. There were no clocks in the Chathiram or in the Mutt. He was worried. He had an old watch that was gifted by his uncle during his upanayanam ceremony. Since he was always around Periyava, he had not worn that watch. It was inside his trunk box. The only time he used them was to give key to it once a day.

Nagu was worried, “If I sleep, how will I wake up Periayava at 3:30 am?”. He went to the store room and took his watch from the trunk box. Without waking anyone, he sat outside Periyava’s room and started chanting Vishnu Sahasranamam. He kept repeating the chant. When it was 3:30 am, he went near Periyava room’s door and started to say “Hara Hara Shankara, Jaya Jaya Shankara”. After sometime, the door opened and Periyava came out of the room and gave a “Suprabatha” darshan. Nagu was lucky to get that darshan that day.

The Acharya reached the entrance of the Choultry. Nagu hurried to arrange for Periyava’s bath. The entire choultry woke up.

For the next couple of days, Nagu’s chant of Vishnu Sahasranamam and “Hara Hara Shankara, Jaya Jaya Shankara” continued.

On the Fourth day, with the wrist watch fixed in his Dhoti, he was chanting Vishnu Sahasranamam, and he dozed off suddenly without his knowledge. Suddenly, he woke up on hearing “Hara Hara Shankara, Jaya Jaya Shankara”. He got up and saw Periyava with a very kindful smile.

Periyava said, “Nagu, it is now 3:30. I think you slept out of your tiredness. All throughout the day you help everyone here and naturally you will be tired” and walked outside the Choultry. Nagu took his watch and checked the time. It was exactly 3:30 am.

He was surprised. Even without my chanting, Periyava was able to tell the time correctly.

How is this possible? He was confused. His ears were ringing with the divine voice “Hara Hara Shankara, Jaya Jaya Shankara”.

That night at 11 pm, Periyava went to His sleep. Nagu had decided that he will not fall asleep today. He had a small jug with water next to him, so that he can wipe his eyes, whenever he feels sleepy.

He successfully controlled his sleep until 2:30 am, but after that he was unable to chant Vishnu Sahasranamam and fell asleep.

The door opened and the Acharya stepped out slowly. He saw Nagu sleeping and the small jug of water next to him. He understood and smiled.

“Hara Hara Shankara, Jaya Jaya Shankara, Wake up, Nagu”, Periyava said in soft voice. Nagu immedietely woke up. Periyava was standing with a smile.

“Nagu, It is 3:30, I think today also you were tired and slept off, Ok, Can you get the things ready for the bath”, Periyava told Nagu and kept walking outside the Choultry. Nagu checked his watch and it was exactly 3:30 am. He was surprised again. In the afternoon, Periyava had completed the His pooja and was sitting at His room. There was nobody else. Nagu went to Periyava, prostrated and stood next to Him silently.

Acharya spoke, “Nagu, It looks like you want to ask something to me. Don’t feel shy. What do you want to know?”

Nagu was hesitant. “Nothing Periyava”, he said. Periyava said with a smile, “I think you have some questions in your mind. You are confused becasue, for the past two days, you were asleep and I wake up exactly at 3:30 even though I do not have a clock.”

Nagu was surprised again, since Periyava exactly asked the question on his mind.

Nagu with a little more boldness said, “Yes Periyava, I do not know why I slept off and Periyava correctly woke me up at 3:30 am. I felt very ashamed, How do you..?”.

Before Nagu could complete, Periyava said with a thunderous laugh, “Did you think that a Karna Yakshini (An angel/Devathai who whispers in the ears) came and told me the time?”

Nagu in a hesitant tone said, “Not like that Periyava. I was interested to know”.

Periyava then started saying, “Nobody came and told me. A bus actually told me the time daily. It is the madurai T.V Sundaram Iyengar’s bus. Don’t be surprised, on the first day when I went out in the morning, I saw a bus cross the Choultry and go into the town. The same thing happened on the following days. When I enquired, I was told that it was bus owned by T.V.S Company and the first bus of the day from Madurai to Pudukottai. The bus service is so punctual that we can adjust our clocks by seeing the time the bus comes. From the fourth day, I woke up on hearing the bus. There are no other secrets.

Nagu was mesmerized by the reply of the Acharya.
