Thiruvannamalai Karthigai Deepam will be lit on Dec 12 2016. For non tamizh readers, here are the salient features mentioned in the picture below:
1. There is a new container for this year’s Karthigai Deepam as the old one is not fit anymore. The container has been changed after 12 years.
2. This task, traditionally has been done by the Nattar community. 4 people made this container in 15 days.
3. The container weighs 160kgs, 5 feet tall, has 1000 liter capacity and is fully made of copper. The manufacturing cost of the container is Rs. 1.75 lakhs
4. The Karthigai Maha Deepam is lit at the hill top on Dec. 12 2016 which 2668 feet high.

On this occasion, it is good to remember two verses in connection with the Annamalai Deepam. In 1931-32, during the Deepam festival, Muruganar, devotee and poet, wrote a verse on the true significance of Annamalai and requested Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi to write on the true significance of the Deepam. Here are the two verses:
அருணாசல தத்துவம் [ முருகனார்]
புத்தியகங் காரம் புலம்பெய்த வோங்கு
மத்தி யிதயந்தான் மறையவனு மாலு
நத்தவறி யாது நலங்குலைய வன்னார்
மத்தியொளி ரண்ணா மலையினது மெய்யே
The sudden rise of the blazing column of Annamalai in front of Brahma and Vishnu, and their utter distress in not being able to understand its beginning or end is symbolic of the Sphurana of the Heart Centre as the real Self of the intellect and the ego.
தீப தர்சன தத்துவம் [பகவான்]
இத்தனுவே நானா மெனுமதியை நீக்கி
புத்தியித யத்தே பொருந்தியக நோக்கா
லத்துவித மாமெய் யகச்சுடர்காண் கைபூ
மத்தியெனு மண்ணா மலைச்சுடர்காண் மெய்யே.
Getting rid of the idea that “I am the body” and merging the mind into the Heart to realise the Self as the non-dual Being and the light of all is the real significance of the darshan of the beacon on Annamalai, the centre of the universe.
