சாஸ்திரத்தில் அவனவனும் தன் வஸ்திரத்தைத் தானே தோய்த்துப் போட்டுக் கொள்ளணும், தன் சாதத்தை தானே களைந்து வைத்துப் பொங்கித் தின்ன வேண்டும். (ஸ்வயபாகம் என்பது இதுதான்) என்றெல்லாந்தான் சொல்லியிருக்கிறது. ”கந்தையானாலும் கசக்கிக் கட்டு” என்கிறபோது கட்டிக் கொள்வது மட்டும் இவன் என்றில்லை; ‘கசக்க’ வேண்டியவனும் இவன்தான்! ‘அம்மாவையோ வேறு யாரையோ கசக்கும்படி பண்ணி (மனஸும் கசக்கும்படிப் பண்ணி) நீ கட்டிக்கொள்’ என்று இல்லை.

ஒருத்தனுடைய நித்ய சர்யைகளை [அன்றாட நடவடிக்கைகளை] தர்ம சாஸ்திரத்தில் சொல்கிறபோது அவன் கார்யம் முழுவதையும் அவனே பார்த்துக் கொள்ளும்படிதான் வைத்திருக்கிறது. பூஜைக்குப் புஷ்பம், பத்ரங்கூட அவனவனேதான் பறித்துக்கொள்ள வேண்டுமென்று இருக்கிறது. ஆனாலும் குரு மாதிரி ஸ்தானத்திலிருக்கிற ஒரு பெரியவர், வயோதிகர், மாதா பிதாக்கள் ஆகியவர்களுக்குக் கைங்கர்யம் செய்வது புண்யமென்பதால் இப்படிப்பட்டவர்களுக்காக சிஷ்ய ஸ்தானத்தில், புத்ர ஸ்தானத்திலிருப்பவர்கள் வஸ்திரம் தோய்த்துப் போடுவது, புஷ்பம் பறித்து வருவது, பூஜா கைங்கர்யம் பண்ணுவது என்றெல்லாம் ஏற்பட்டிருக்கிறது. – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீசந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள்மொழிகள்

Our sastras dictate that we should wash our own clothes and cook our own food (this is called swayambhaakam). When an old proverb states that even a torn cloth should be washed and worn, it means that it should be washed by us. We should not ask the mother or somebody else to wash it for us, thus wringing their hearts also in the process. Our ancient scriptures have ruled that one’s daily duties should be performed by oneself. Even flowers for the daily worship, should be plucked by him; but since it is a matter of great ‘Punniyaa” to perform services to parents, elders and Gurus who are equal in stature to our parents, the children and disciples perform services like washing their clothes and plucking the flowers for them. – Jagadguru Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Swamigal
