When you serve others, it accelerates your spiritual growth and purifies the mind whereas duties performed towards one self and family do not lead to any spiritual benefits. After all there is a material benefit already accruing to the individual when he performs the duties towards his own self and family. When he gets his daughter married into a good family, he feels a sense of worldly satisfaction even if he has to spend a lot in the process. When a person bestows material benefit on somebody outside his own family circle, it is justifiable that the spiritual benefit accrues to the former.
