The rituals and procedures prescribed by our Vedic religion place the individual at the crux of things. Even when a social service is ordained to be performed, it eventually is directed towards the spiritual growth of the individual. The individuals at the receiving end of the philanthropy like the deprived who received the charity, the patient who received the treatment, and the student whose studies were furthered should not be content with the material assistance they had received, complacent that their material problems had been solved. They should direct their efforts towards spiritual development.
