சர்ச்சில், மசூதியில் புத்தவிஹாரத்தில் silent prayer செய்கிறதுபோலக் கோயிலில் செய்யணும் என்பது முக்ய உத்தேசமில்லை; ஏகாந்தத்தில் த்யானம்தான் முக்யம். த்யானம், congregational worship [கூடிப் பிரார்த்தனை சொல்லி வழிபடுவது] ஆகியவற்றிற்காகக் கோயில் இல்லை. ராஜா நம்மை ரக்ஷிக்கிறான் என்பதற்காக அவனுக்கு அரண்மனை, அலங்காரம், பரிவாரம், படாடோபம் எல்லாம் கொடுக்கிறோம்; வரியும் கொடுக்கிறோம் அல்லவா? அதே மாதிரி ஸர்வலோக ராஜாவாக, ஸர்வ கால ரக்ஷகனாக இருக்கப்பட்ட பகவானுக்குப் பொன்னையும் பூஷணத்தையும் கொடுத்து பெரிசாகக் கோயில் கட்டி வைத்து, மேளதாள விமரிசைகளோடு உத்ஸவம் செய்யவே, community thanks- giving -ஆக (ஸமூஹ நனறியறிவிப்பாக) collective offering -ஆக [கூடிக் காணிக்கை செலுத்துவதாக] ஆலய வழிபாட்டு முறை அமைந்திருக்கிறது. இங்கே அமைதியை எதிர்பார்க்க முடியாது. அமர்க்களம், ஆரவாரம், மேளதாளம், கண்டாமணி அதிர்வேட்டு இருக்கத்தானிருக்கும். அமைதியாக த்யானம் பண்ண அவரவர் வீட்டிலும் பூஜாக்ருஹமுண்டு. ஆற்றங்கரை, குளத்தங்கரை உண்டு.
இப்படிச் சொன்னதால் கோயிலில் அவரவர்களும் இரைச்சல் போட்டுக்கொண்டு, அரட்டை அடித்துக் கொண்டிருப்பதற்கு லைஸென்ஸ் தந்ததாக அர்த்தமில்லை. சாஸ்த்ரோக்தாக அநுமதிக்கப்பட்டிருக்கும் ஓசைகளை – மணி அடிப்பது, வேத கோஷம், தேவாரம், பஜனை, மேளம், புறப்பாட்டில் வெடி இவற்றைத்தான் – நான் சொன்னது.
இந்த மாதிரி சாஸ்த்ரோக்தமான சப்தங்களுக்கே மௌன த்யானத்தில் ஒருத்தனை ஈடுபடுத்துகிற அபூர்வமான சக்தி உண்டு. இம்மாதிரி சப்தங்களுக்கு நடுவிலேயே ஸந்நிதானத்தில் சிறிது கண்ணை மூடிக்கொண்டால், அல்லது தக்ஷிணாமூர்த்திக்கு எதிரே ஐபம் பண்ண உட்கார்ந்துவிட்டால், சட்டென்று ஒரு லயிப்பு உண்டாகிவிடும். – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீசந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள்மொழிகள்
Our temples are not intended for silent prayers as done in Churches, Mosques, or Buddhist Vihaaraas. Individual meditation is very important for us. Temples do not exist for meditation or congregational prayers. We build palaces, decorate them and provide the necessary paraphernalia to our Kings who protect and rule over us. We pay him taxes too. Similarly Bhagawan is the Universal King and Protector. We offer Him Gold and other offerings and celebrate the festivals with lot of pomp and splendor. Worship at our temples is a kind of community thanksgiving and collective offering. There can be no quietness at our temples. There will be sound, music, bells and an atmosphere of bustle and activity. Meditation is earmarked for Pooja rooms at homes, river banks, and temple tanks. This does not mean that there is a license for meaningless chatter and noise at temples. I only referred to those sounds sanctioned by our sastras like the tolling of bells, performance of musical instruments, chanting of Vedas, Devaram and bursting of crackers during processions. These traditional sounds themselves have a strange power to draw one towards silent meditation.
