If philanthropy has to actually result in the purification of the mind, the vital factor is the utmost humility with which we perform those services. We should not allow even an iota of egoistic thought that we are superior and we are helping others. If this thought peeps into our mind it will completely negate the fruit of philanthropy – purity of mind. Moreover, the natural corollary is that we should not expect anything in return.
