ப்ராணா வஸ்தையில் இருக்கிறவர்களிடம் கோயில் ப்ரஸாதத்துடன் போக வேண்டும். அவர்களுக்கு கங்கா தீர்த்தம் கொடுக்க வேண்டும். விபூதி இடவேண்டும். துளஸியை வாயில் போடவேண்டும். அவர்கள் பக்கத்தில் உட்கார்ந்துகொண்டு ‘சிவ சிவ சிவ சிவ’ என்றோ ‘ராம ராம ராம ராம’ என்றோ உரக்கச் சொல்ல வேண்டும். உரக்கச் சொல்ல வேண்டியது அவசியம். ஜீவன் காதிலே அதுபட்டு மனஸைத் திருப்ப வேண்டுமாதலால், உயிர்போகும் வரையில் இப்படி நாம ஜபம் செய்வதுதான் ச்ரேஷ்டம். ஆனால் ப்ராணாவஸ்தையிலேயே ஒரு ஜீவன் மணிக்கணகாகக இழுத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தால் என்ன பண்ணுவது? நமக்கு மற்றக் கார்யம் இருக்கத்தானே செய்யும்? அதனால் பக்கத்திலே பந்துக்களில் யாராவது ஒருத்தர் முறை போட்டுக் கொண்டு உட்கார்ந்து நாம ஜபம் பண்ணும்படியாக ஏற்பாடு செய்துவிட்டு நாம், ‘நம் கடமையைக் கொஞ்சமாவது செய்தோம்’ என்று புறப்பட வேண்டும். குறைந்த பக்ஷம் சிவ நாமாவோ, ராம நாமாவோ 1008 தடவையவது நாம் ஒரு ஜீவனுக்காகச் சொல்ல வேண்டும். இப்படிப் பலபேர் சொன்னது அந்த ஜீவனுக்குள்ளே போய் தானாக அது உள்நினைவில் பகவானை நினைத்துக் கொண்டிருக்கும்படியாகப் பண்ணியிருக்கும் என்று வைத்துக் கொள்ளலாம். ஆனால் இது இரண்டாம் பக்ஷந்தான். நாம் கடைசிவரை இருக்க முடியாமல் வந்துவிட்டாலும்கூட, ஒரு ஜீவன் பிரிகிறபோது அங்கு பகவந்நாம சப்தம் இருக்கும்படியாக அவனுடைய பந்துக்களையாவது ஜபிக்கும்படி ஏற்பாடு செய்துவிட்டு வருவதே ச்லாக்யம். – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீசந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள்மொழிகள்

One should go with Temple Prasadam to the person on the death bed. We should feed him the Holy Ganges water. We should apply Vibhuthi on the forehead. We should feed him Thulasi. We should sit near the death bed and chant the holy divine names of Rama or Siva again and again. This divine chanting should be done loudly. Since this chanting has to divert the mind of the dying person towards Bhagawan, it is ideal if it is done till the soul leaves the body. But if the final struggle is prolonged, it may be impossible for us to stay there since we may have other tasks to attend to. So we should make arrangement for the divine chanting to continue (by the relatives) and leave the place with the satisfaction of having done our duty. We should chant the holy name of Siva or Rama atleast 1008 times for the departing soul. We assume that this continous divine chanting would have reached the depths of this soul and ensured that it thinks of the Divine in its final moments.
