தனி மனிதனுக்குக் கஷ்டம் வருகிறதுபோலவே, ஒரு ஜன ஸமுதாயத்துக்கே பஞ்சம், வெள்ளம், எரிமலை, பூகம்பம், தீவிபத்து முதலான உத்பாதங்கள் ஏற்படுவதிலும் மற்றவர்களுடைய பரோபகார சிந்தனைக்கு பகவான் வைக்கிற பரீக்ஷையும் சேர்ந்திருக்கும். இம்மாதிரி நிவாரணப் பணிகளைப்பற்றி நான் இதுவரை சொல்லவில்லை. விசேஷமாக இதைபற்றிச் சொல்லி வற்புறுத்த வேண்டியதுமில்லை. இப்படி ஒரு பெரிய கஷ்டம் பலபேருக்கு ஏற்படுகிறது என்றால், யாரும் சொல்லாமலே பணத்தாலோ, சரீரத்தாலோ உதவி பண்ண வேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணம் அவரவர்க்கும் பொங்கிக்கொண்டு வரவேண்டும். ஸர்க்கார், ரெட் க்ராஸ், ராமக்ருஷ்ணா மிஷன் முதலானவர்களோடோ, அல்லது தாங்களாகவே ஸங்கமாகச் சேர்ந்தோ, அல்லது தனிப்பட்ட முறையிலோ, எப்படியானாலும் இந்த மாதிரியான Calamity-களில் ஒவ்வொருவரும் பணி செய்ய வேண்டியது அவசியம். தனி மனிதனின் கஷ்டத்துக்கு மூலகாரணம் அவனுடைய பூர்வ கர்மா என்கிறாற் போலவே, இப்படிப்பட்ட விபத்துக்களையும் “Natural calamity”, “இயற்கையின் சீற்றம்” என்று இந்த நாளில் எழுதினாலும், இதெல்லாம் பொதுவாக மநுஷ்ய ஸமூஹம் முழுதுமே பண்ணும் பாபத்துக்காக பகவான் தருகிற தண்டனைதான் என்று சாஸ்த்ரம் சொல்லும். தண்டனையாகப் பெற்று வருத்தப்பட்டுக் கொண்டேதான் அந்தப் பாபத்தை நாம் தீர்க்க வேண்டும் என்றில்லை. இம்மாதிரி ஸமயங்களில் நாம் பண்ணுகிற மனப்பூர்வமான கஷ்ட நிவாரணத் தொண்டாலும் பாபத்தில் பாக்கியிருப்பதைப் போக்கிக் கொண்டு விடலாம். இப்படித் தொண்டு செய்யாமல் கருங்கல் மாதிரி இருந்தால் அதுவே ஒரு பாபம். இன்றைக்கு ஜன ஸமூஹத்தின் பிரதிநிதியாக இன்னொருத்தன் வாங்கிக் கொண்ட தண்டனை, கல்மாதிரி இருக்கிற நமக்கே நாளைக்கு வரும். – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீசந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள்மொழிகள்
As the individual suffers because of his karma or previous acts, similarly the entire society is sometimes subject to disasters like drought, floods, earthquakes, and fire accidents. These can also be considered as tests to judge the charitable feelings in us. I need not stress upon such relief operations. Our assistance should be given volountarily during such occasions. Either individually or by forming associations or joining hands with institutions like Red Cross or Ramakrishna Mission one should serve the humanity during such a crisis. Though these disasters are termed natural calamities, the Shastraas consider these to be punishment for the Paabam (sins) of the entire human community. It is not necessary that we should expiate these sins only by undergoing such calamitous punishments, but we can also do so by our sincere efforts at provding relief during such disasters. If we remain like rocks without extending a helping hand, that sin will rebound on us and we will be punished in due course. – Jagadguru Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Swamigal
