மநுஷ்யனின் ஆத்மாபிவிருத்திக்கு ப்ரதிகூலமாக வெறும் லௌகிக ரீதியில் செய்கிற எந்த உபகாரமும் உபகாரமேயில்லை, அபகாரம்தான். எத்தனைக்கெத்தனை எளிமையாக வாழ்கிறோமோ அத்தனைக்கத்தனை ஆத்மக்ஷேமம். ஆனதால் மற்றவர்கள் எளிய வாழ்க்கையில் இருக்கும்படியாகப் பண்ணுவதுதான் நிஜமான உபகாரம். இதை எப்படிப் பண்ணுவது? நாம் டாம்பீகமாக வாழ்ந்து கொண்டு அவர்களுக்கு உபதேசம் செய்தால் நடக்குமா? ஆகையால் நாமே எளிமையாக வாழ்ந்து காட்ட வேண்டும். அதாவது, ‘நாம் எப்படி வாழ்கிறோமோ, அப்படியே பிறரும் வாழவேண்டும்’ என்று நினைப்பதற்கு முந்தி, நாம் எப்படி வாழவேண்டும் என்பதையும் தீர்மானம் பண்ணிக் கொள்ள வேண்டும். ‘ஏழைகள் உள்பட மற்றவர்கள் எல்லோரும் எப்படி வாழ முடியுமோ, எப்படி வாழ்ந்தால்தான் ஆத்மாபிவிருத்திக்கு நல்லதோ, அப்படித்தான் நாமும் வாழவேண்டும்; அதாவது ரொம்ப ஸிம்பிளாக வாழவேண்டும்’ என்று முதலில் தீர்மானம் பண்ணிக் கொள்ள வேண்டும். வயிறு ரொம்பச் சாப்பாடு, மானத்தைக் காப்பாற்றத் துணி, இருப்பதற்கு ஒரு குச்சு வீடு — இம்மாதிரியான அடிப்படை (basic) தேவைகள் எல்லோருக்கும் பூர்த்தியாக வேண்டும். இதற்குமேல் ஆசைக்கு மேல் ஆசை, தேவைக்குமேல் தேவை என்று பறக்க வேண்டியதில்லை. அப்படி மற்றவர்களைப் பறக்காமல் இருக்கச் செய்வதற்காக நாமும் எளிமையாக வாழவேண்டும். – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீசந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள்மொழிகள்

Any service which is rendered to improve the material comfort of somebody but can hinder his spiritual development is harmful.  Simpler the life we lead, greater is the benefit spiritually. Therefore it is of great help to everyone if we manage to convince others to adopt a simple living. How is it possible? If we lead extravagant lives, it is not possible to advise others on simplicity. Before we desire that others should live like us, we should decide on how we are going to live. We should adopt that way of life which is possible by even a poor person without harming his spiritual development and integrity. In other words, we should decide upon a simple way of life. Basic necessities of food, clothing, and a roof over the head have to be fulfilled. We should not cultivate more and more desires.
