ஒரு நாள் பெரியவா தரையில் சயனித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார்.நானும் என் மனைவியும் அவர் பாதாரவிந்தத்தின் அடியில் உட்கார்ந்திருந்தோம்.

”ஸ்ரீநிவாசா உனக்கு காரைக்கால் அம்மையார் சரிதம் தெரியும்மா?” என்று கேட்டார்.

”நாயன்மார்களில் ஒருவர் என்று கேள்விப்பட்டிருக்கிறேன்”

பின்னர் அதே முற்றத்தில் ஸ்ரீபெரியவா திருவடிகளின் சமீபத்தில் நாங்கள் இருவரும் தரையில் படுத்து உறங்கினோம். ஆழ்ந்த நித்திரை.

”ஏய் யாரடா அங்கே”! என்ற பெரியவா குரல் கேட்டு விழித்து எழுந்தோம். உடனே அவள் தன்னுடன் எப்போதும் வைத்திருக்கும் கற்பூரத்தை தாம்பாளத்தில் வைத்து ஏற்றினாள். ஸ்ரீபெரியவா எழுந்து உட்கார்ந்தார். கற்பூர தீப ஒளியில் அவருடைய விஸ்வரூப தரிசனம் கிடைக்கப் பெற்றோம்!

இதே கைங்கர்யத்தை என் மனைவி நாங்கள் எத்தனை நாட்கள் மடத்தில் தங்கினாலும், ப்ரதிதினமும், பெரியவாளுக்கு கற்பூரஹாரத்தி எடுத்து சேவிப்பது வழக்கம். இருளின் மத்தியில் கற்பூர சேவையில் பெரியவா விஸ்வரூப தரிசனம் எங்களுக்கு எப்போதும் கிடைத்து வந்தது. பெரியவா சயனித்ததும் அவர்
பாதகமலத்தின் அடியில் நாங்கள் தம்பதிகளாக சயனிக்கும் பாக்யமும் தவறாமல் கிடைத்தது. அவர் அனுக்ரஹத்தினால் அந்த பாக்யமும், ஸ்வதந்திரமும் எங்களுக்கு ப்ராப்தமானபடியால் மடத்தில் உள்ள எல்லாரும் எங்களை அன்புடனும், மரியாதையுடனும் நடத்தினார்கள்.

ஸ்ரீபெரியவாள் யதியாகவும், பீடாதிபதியாகவும், ஜகத்குருவாகவும் ஆனபடியால், சாமான்ய க்ரஹஸ்தனான எங்களுக்கு தம்பதிகளாக நெருங்கி கைங்கர்யம் செய்யும் வாய்ப்பில்லை.
அடியேனுக்கு வேத அத்யயனம், வித்வாம்சம், பாண்டித்யம் போன்ற எந்த யோக்யதையோ, மடத்துக்கு அளவு கடந்த திரவிய சகாயம் செய்யக்கூடிய தனிகனாகவோ இல்லாத போதும், ஸ்ரீபெரியவாள் அத்வைத சம்ப்ரதாயத்தைச் சேர்ந்தவராயிருந்தும், நான் விசிஷ்டாத்வைதனாயிருந்தும், அடியனை பத்னி சஹிதம் அவர் திருவடிச் சாயையில் இருத்தி வைத்துக் கொண்டது தெய்வசங்கல்பம் அன்றி வேறில்லை.!

ஒருநாள் விஸ்வரூப தரிசனத்துக்கு ஹாரத்தி காண்பிக்கும்போது நான் ஒரு சம்ஸ்க்ருத ஸ்லோகம் சொல்லி தண்டம் சமர்ப்பித்து நின்றேன்.

அது தத்வம் சொல்வதாக அமைந்த அழகிய ஸ்லோகம்.

ப்ரம்மானந்தம் ப்ரமஸுகிர்தம் கேவலம் ஞானமூர்த்திம்
த்வந்த்வாதீதம் ககனஸத்ருஸம் தத்வமஸ்யாமி லக்ஷ்யம்
ஏகம்நித்யம் விமலமசலம் ஸர்வதீஸாக்ஷி பூதம்
பாவாதீதம் த்ரிகுணரஹிதம் ஸத்குரும் தம்நமாமி ||
அப்போது வித்யார்த்தி நாராயண ஐயர் என்பவர் அங்கு இருந்தார்.

அன்று ஸ்வர்ணமுகி நதியில் நானும் என் மனைவியும் ஸ்னானம் செய்யும்போது, நாராயண ஐயரும் எங்களுடன் இருந்தார். அவர் ஸம்ஸ்க்ருதம் தெரியாவிடில் கற்றுக்கொள்; உச்சரிப்புத் தவறாக சொல்லாதே என்றார். நான் வெட்கம் அடைந்தேன். அன்று இரவு பெரியவா முற்றத்தில் மேனாவில் அமர்ந்திருந்தார்.

பத்து மணி அளவில் நாங்கள் அம்மாவுடன் வந்தனம் செய்து நின்றிருந்தோம். வித்யார்த்தி நாராயண ஐயரும் உடனிருந்தார்.

அவரைப் பார்த்து பெரியவா ”இவாளை உனக்குத் தெரியுமா”? என்றார். நாராயண ஐயர், தெரியுமே நெல்லிக்குப்பம் வைஷ்ணவ தம்பதிகள்” என்று பதில் சொன்னார். ”காலையில் ஸ்னானம் செய்யும்போது கேட்டுத் தெரிந்து கொண்டேன். ஸம்ஸ்க்ருதம் கற்றுக் கொள்ளும்படி அவாளிடம் சொன்னேன்.” என்றார்.

சிறிது நேரம் மௌனத்துக்குப் பிறகு பெரியவா ஒரு ஸ்லோகம் சொல்லி நாராயணாய்யரிடம் அதற்கு அர்த்தம் கேட்டார். அவரும் அர்த்தம் சொன்னார்.

ஸ்ரீபெரியவாள் அந்தச் சொல்லுக்கு ”ப்ரம்மா என்று கூட அர்த்தமாகிறதே! விஷ்ணுன்னு தான் சொல்லணுமா? ப்ரம்ம என்று வைச்சுண்டே அதற்கு முழு அர்த்தமும் சொல்லலாமே!

”இவ்வளவு படிச்ச உனக்கே சரியான அர்த்தம் சொல்லத் தெரியவில்லை. நீ போய் அவனுக்கு புத்தி சொல்லப் போயிட்டயோ? ஏதோ அவனுக்குத் தெரிந்ததை ஆசையாகச் சொன்னான்”

அன்று முதம் வித்யார்த்தி நாராயணஐயர் எங்களிடம் அதிகப் ப்ரியமாகப் பழகினார்.

இதுவும் நெல்லிக்குப்பம் தம்பதியினரின் அனுபவமே! இவர்களுக்கு பெரியவாளோட பரிபூர்ண கடாக்ஷம் இருக்கு என்பதில் சந்தேகம் ஏதும் உண்டோ!

மேலும் பலமுறை பலவிதமான அனுபவங்கள் இவர்களுக்கு!

Do you know the meaning of this Sloka?
One day Sri Periyavaa was resting on the floor in his courtyard. My wife and I were sitting near his lotus feet. He asked me

“Do you know the story of Kaaraikal Ammaiyaar, Srinivas?”.

I replied,” I just know that she is one of the 63 nayanmaars”. After some time, we just slept near the feet of Sri Periyavaa in the same yard. It was a deep sleep.

Early morning we woke up hearing the voice of Sri Periyavaa, “Hey, who is that person?” .My wife immediately took out the camphor (which she always keeps it with her) and placed on the plate.  Periyavaa got up and my wife did arathi (light waved in darkness before an icon). We had the first glimpse (Vishwaroopa darshan) of Periyavaa in that dark early morning.

Whenever we used to stay in the Sri Matam, my wife rendered this service on a daily basis and we were blessed to have his darshan in the early morning. It was bliss to see his glowing face first in the dim morning light. We were also blessed to sleep near his lotus feet every time in Sri Matam. A blessed couple indeed. Due to these reasons, we earned the respect and affection of the people in Sri Matam. It was the grace and blessings of Maha Periyavaa.
It was impossible for householders like us to render service to a person like Maha Periyavaa as he was a sage apart from being the head of a religious organization and Jagadguru. I was neither trained in Vedas nor had knowledge on Vedic philosophies. I was also not a Pundit trained in religious practices or was making major financial contributions to Sri Matam. Being a Vaishnavite, I belonged to Vishishtadvaida philosophies unlike Sri Periyavaa who belonged to Advaida philosophies. These factors never assumed any significance to keep us away from Maha Periyavaa or from his service.

One day after the vishwaroopa darshan and arathi, I bowed in front of the seer and recited a Sanskrit slokam which had some philosophical meaning:

Brahmanandam Pramasukirtham kevalam gnyanamurthim

Tvantvaathitam gaganasadhrusham tatvamasyami lakshyam

Ekamnithyam vimalamachalam sarvathisakshi bhootam

Bhavadheedam trigunarahitam sadgurum tamnamami||
A Vedic scholar called Vidyaarthi Narayana Iyer was also listening this. Later on, I went to Swarnamukhi river to bath with my wife.  Narayana Iyer was also bathing there. He came to me and advised to learn Sanskrit properly so that I do not pronounce words wrongly in front of others. I felt very ashamed. That night, Sri Periyavaa was sitting on the dais in his courtyard.

About ten at night, along with my mother we did salutations at MahaPeriyavaa’s feet. Vidyaarthi Narayana Iyer was also standing with us. Sri Periyavaa questioned him pointing at us,” Do you know these people?” Narayana Iyer immediately replied that he got introduced to us in the morning itself and addressed us as “Nellikuppam Vaishnava Couple”. He also told Periyavaa that he had advised me to learn Sanskrit.
After some moments of silence, SriPeriyavaa recited a slokam and asked Narayana Iyer to tell him the meaning and he did so. Periyavaa told him that in the explanation given by Iyer he had assumed Lord Vishnu for a word in that slokam and it may also denote Lord Brahma and Iyer could have interpreted the meaning in different way.
Periyavaa also told him,” Despite trained in the language you were not able to give proper explanation and you were advising him to learn Sanskrit. I was pleased to hear him as he had done so out of his devotion and respect towards me”. Hearing this Narayana Iyer realized his mistake and became very close and affectionate towards us.
It is thus evident that the Nellikuppam couple had complete blessings from MahaPeriyavaa and this is just one of such incidents which they experienced with Periyavaa.
