(ராமா ராமையா, காஞ்சி காமாக்ஷி, மதுரை மீனாக்ஷி, காசி விசாலாக்ஷி, இந்த வேளைக்கு இன்னிக்குப் படி  போடலே ஐயா தான் கேக்கணும்.)

மகா பெரியவா,ரொம்ப விளையாட்டுப் புருஷர். ராத்திரி நான் தூங்கிண்டிருக்கிறபோது, ஒரு மணி, ரெண்டு மணிக்கு – என்னை எழுப்புவா.

‘எதுவோ? என்ன முக்கியமான வேலையோ?’ன்னு, பரபரப்போடு எழுந்திருப்பேன்.

“ராத்திரி என்ன சாப்பிட்டே?

வயிறு நிறைய சாப்பிட்டியோ?”ன்னு கேட்டுட்டு “சரி போய் படுத்துக்கோ..”ன்னு சொல்லுவா! ஒரு சின்ன தமாஷ்!

மகா பெரியவா, எப்போ உபந்யாஸம் பண்ணினாலும், ச்ருதி ஸ்ம்ருதி புராணானாம் ஆலயம் கருணாலயம்-ங்கிற சுலோகத்தைச் சொல்லிவிட்டுத் தான் பேச்சைத் தொடங்குவா.

பிள்ளையார் கோவிலைக் கண்டால் போதும். மகாப் பெரியவாளுக்கு ரொம்ப குஷி வந்துடும்! எல்லாப் பிள்ளையார்க்கும் சிதர்க்காய் போடணும். ‘அப்போதாண்டா குழந்தைகளெல்லாம் வந்து தேங்காய்ச் சில்லு பொறுக்கிக் கொள்ளும்-னு காரணம் சொல்லுவா.மேனாவிலே எப்போதும் தேங்காய் இருக்கும்-சிதர்க்காய் போடறத்துக்காகவே!

அதே மாதிரி ஸ்ரீமடத்திலேர்ந்து, காமாக்ஷி கோவிலுக்குப் போகிற போதெல்லாம், கங்கைகொன்டான் மண்டப ஆஞ்சநேயருக்கு ஒரு வாழைப்பழச் சீப்பு  நைவேத்யத்துக்குக் கொடுக்கச் சொல்லுவா.

‘புத்திர் பலம்…’ சுலோகம் சொல்லி, ஆஞ்சநேயர் அனுக்ரஹம் வேணும் – என்பார்.

ஸ்ரீ மடத்திலே, எடுபிடி வேலை செய்கிற சிப்பந்திகளை கவனிக்கவருக்கு கார்வார்-னு பேரு.

ஒரு தடவை,அவர் மேனா சுமக்கிற போகிகளுக்குப் படி போடலே. போகிகள் மகாப் பெரியவா கவனத்துக்குக் கொண்டு வரணும்கிறதுக்காக, மேனாவைச் சுமந்துண்டு போறப்போ இப்படிப் பாடினார்கள்.

ராமா ராமையா
காஞ்சி காமாக்ஷி
மதுரை மீனாக்ஷி
காசி விசாலாக்ஷி
இந்த வேளைக்கு
இன்னிக்குப் படி  போடலே
ஐயா தான் கேக்கணும்.

பெரியவாளுக்கு விஷயம் புரிஞ்சு போச்சு.
அப்புறம் கார்வார்கிட்ட பேசி, சமாதானப்படுத்தி
போகிகளுக்குப் படி போடச் சொன்னார்.

Maha Periyava is a mischievous soul. At night when I would be sleeping— around one o’clock or two o’clock— He would wake me up.”Must be some important work,” I would think and wake up hurriedly.

“What did you eat tonight? Did you eat to your stomach’s full?” He would ask and then He would say, ”Ok now go to sleep!” Just a small prank.

Maha Periyava, whenever He began a religious lecture, would recite the sloka ”Sruthi Smruthi Purananam Aalayam Karunalayam” before starting to speak.

The moment a Ganesha temple is sighted,Periyava’s heart would be filled with sheer joy. Sitharu kaai (breaking a coconut for Ganesha) must be performed before every temple.” Only then can the small kids enjoy the coconut pieces,” He would reason out. There would always be a stock of coconut in the Mena (Palanquin) for this purpose .

Likewise, while going from the Sri Mutt to Kamakshi temple, he would insist that a banana bunch be offered to Anjaneyar for Naivedyam. He would recite the sloka “Buddhir Balam” and would say that we always need Anjaneya’s blessings.

At the Sri Mutt, the person who looks after the errand boys is called Kaarvaar. Once, the Kaarvaar failed to pay the persons who were carrying Periyava’s Mena. The Bogies (those who carry the Mena) wanted to bring this to the notice of Periyava and started singing;

Rama Ramayya
Kanchi Kamakshi
Madurai Meenakshi
Kasi Visalakshi
This time
This day
We aren’t bestowed with anything
Only the Lord has to answer.

Periyava clearly understood the matter. Then he spoke to the Kaarvaar and pacified them asking him to pay them their due.
