While we call as devotees of Periyava – if we ask ourselves if we had refined ourselves, built necessary foundation to receive His blessings, deep inside we know that our answer would be “not really” – at least from my individual perspective….While reading and enjoying devotees’ experiences, we need to constantly do self-inquiry to become the right “paathram” to receive the blessings of any mahans! How long would it take to become one? “Just Wait” is the answer. With bakthi and surrender towards this mahan, we need to wait for Him to make us eligible at the receiving end. He knows when to call us!!! That is the moral of this experience – my takeaway!

வழக்கம்போல அந்த ஒரு ஏகாதசியன்றும் நானும் என் நண்பர் கோபுவும் காஞ்சி ஸ்ரீமடத்திற்கு சென்றிருந்தோம். அப்பொழுது எல்லாம் மஹாப்பெரியவாள் எப்பொழுது வேண்டுமானாலும் தரிசனம் கொடுத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார்கள்.
ஸ்ரீசங்கர மடத்தின் பின்புறத்தில் அவர் உபயோகித்த மேனாவிற்கு அருகில் தரிசனம் தருவது வழக்கம். நாங்கள் சென்றிருந்தபொழுது அந்த மஹான் இரண்டு வெளிநாட்டுப் பெண்களுடன் கொஞ்சம் தள்ளி வேறுபக்கமாக உரையாடிக் கொண்டிருந்தார்கள்.
அந்த வெளிநாட்டுப் பெண்கள் இருவரும் 25 வயதுக்குள்ளானவர்கள். நாங்கள் மற்றவர்களுடன் சுமார் 45 நிமிடங்கள் பெரியவர் தரிசனத்திற்காக காத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தோம். பரமாச்சாரியாரும் தொடர்ந்து அந்தப் பெண்களுடன் பேசிக் கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். அவர் மூவரைத் தவிர, அந்த பக்கத்தில் வேறு ஸ்ரீமடத்தைச் சேர்ந்தவர்கள் யாருமே இல்லை.
அந்தப் பெண்களிடம் பெரியவாள் என்ன பாஷையில் பேசுகிறார்கள் என்று எங்கள் எவருக்குமே தெரியாது. நான் மிகவும் பொறுமை இழந்துவிட்டேன். வழக்கம்போல் அப்பொழுதே மாலை 5 மணியாகி விட்டது. பெரியவாள் தரிசனத்தை முடித்துக்கொண்டு ஸ்ரீகாமாட்சி கோவிலுக்கு போய்விட்டு பிறகு பஸ் பிடித்து விழுப்புரம் திரும்ப வேண்டும். என்ன செய்வது என்றே எனக்குப் புரியவில்லை.
அப்பொழுது அங்கு வந்த ப்ரம்மஸ்ரீ வேதபுரி சாஸ்திரிகளை சந்தித்துப் பேசினேன். ஸ்ரீவேதபுரி சாஸ்திரிகள் கடந்த 60 ஆண்டுகளாக மஹா பெரியவாளிடம் சேவை செய்து வருபவர்.
அவருக்கு பெரியவாளைத் தவிர வேறு ஒன்றுமே தெரியாது. அவரை மஹாபெரியவாள் ஸ்ரீமடத்தில் உள்ள அனைவரையும் அவருடைய பெயரைச் சொல்லி கூப்பிடக் கூடாது. அவரை ப்ரம்மஸ்ரீ என்றுதான் அழைக்க
வேண்டும் என்று அன்புக் கட்டளை போட்டிருந்தார்கள்.
‘இப்படி வருகின்ற வெளிநாட்டுக்காரர்களை பெரியவாள் வேறு ஒரு நேரத்தில் அழைத்து பேசக் கூடாதா? என்னைப் போன்றவர்கள் கிட்டத்தட்ட ஒரு மணியாக காத்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறோமே! எப்பொழுது நாங்கள் ஊர் திரும்புவது’ என்று அவரிடம் நான் குறைபட்டுக் கொண்டிருந்தேன்.
ப்ரம்மஸ்ரீ அவர்கள் என்னை பார்த்து ‘நீங்கள் ஒரு மணி நேரமாகத்தானே வெயிட் பண்ணுகிறீர்கள். அந்த இரண்டு வெளிநாட்டு பெண்களும் பெரியவாளிடம் பேச கடந்த மூன்று நாட்களாக காத்துக் கொண்டிருந்துவிட்டு இன்றுதான் அதுவும் இப்பொழுதுதான் பேசிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள்’ என்றார்கள்.
‘அவர்கள் யார்? அவர்கள் ஏன் இவ்வளவு நாட்களாக காத்திருக்கிறார்கள்? ஸ்ரீமடத்தில் நீங்கள் அவர்களுக்கு மஹாபெரியவாளின் தரிசனத்திற்கு ஏன் ஏற்பாடுகள் செய்யவில்லை’ என்று கேள்விமேல் கேள்வி கேட்டேன். அதற்கு அவர் நிதானமாக சொன்ன விஷயம் இதுதான். அவர்கள் இருவரும் ஜெர்மனி நாட்டைச் சேர்ந்தவர்கள். அமெரிக்காவில் உள்ள ஒரு பல்கலைகழகத்தில் நம்முடைய வேதசாஸ்திரம் மற்றும் வேதாந்தம் பற்றி படித்து டாக்டர் பட்டம் (Ph.D) பெற்றிருக்கிறார்கள்.
அவர்கள் படித்தது போதுமா இல்லை இன்னும் படிக்க வேண்டுமா என்ற சந்தேகத்தை அவர்களுடைய பேராசிரியரிடம் அங்கு கேட்டார்களாம். அதற்கு அந்த அமெரிக்கர் இவர்களை தமிழ்நாட்டில் உள்ள காஞ்சிப் பெரியவரை சந்தித்து உங்கள் சந்தேகங்களை தெரிந்து கொள்ளுங்கள். அவர் ஒருவரால் தான் உங்கள் சந்தேகங்களை தீர்க்க முடியும் என்று இங்கு அனுப்பிவிட்டாராம்.
அவர்கள் 3 நாட்களுக்கு முன்னால் அவர்களுடைய இந்த பெரிய சந்தேகத்தை மஹாபெரியவாளிடம் கேட்டார்களாம். அந்த மஹான் அதற்கு அவர்களை கூர்ந்து பார்த்து “Just Wait” (கொஞ்சம் பொறுங்கள்) என்று சொல்லிவிட்டு உள்ளே சென்றுவிட்டாராம். பிறகு அந்த இரண்டு ஜெர்மனியப் பெண்களும் பெரியவாளின் அருகில் உள்ள மேடையில் உட்கார்ந்து ஜபம் செய்ய ஆரம்பித்து விட்டார்களாம். மஹாபெரியவாளோ அந்த திக்குகூட திரும்பவே இல்லையாம்.
வெகுநேரம் கழித்தும் பெரியவாள் அவர்களை அழைக்கவே இல்லையாம். ஸ்ரீமடத்தில் இருந்தவர்கள் அந்த பெண்களை சந்தித்து ‘நாங்கள் வேண்டுமானால் ஸ்வாமிகளிடம் போய் ஞாபக படுத்துகிறோம். ஒருவேளை அவர் மறந்து விட்டார்களோ தெரியவில்லை’ என்று கேட்டார்களாம்.
“No, No” என்ற அந்த இரு பெண்களும் படபடப்போடு துடித்தார்களாம். தயவுசெய்து அந்த தவறை மட்டும் செய்து விடாதீர்கள். எங்களை எப்பொழுது கூப்பிட வேண்டும் என்று அவருக்குத் தெரியும். “His Holiness is a great Saint“ (அந்த மஹாப்பெரியவாள் ஒரு புனிதமான, பெரிய சன்யாசி) அவராக எங்களை அழைக்கும் வரையில் நாங்கள் இங்கேயே தங்கி தியானம் செய்து கொண்டிருக்கிறோம் என்று கூறிவிட்டு கடந்த மூன்று நாட்களாக ஸ்ரீமடத்திலேயே தங்கி பழம்-பால் மட்டும் சாப்பிட்டுவிட்டு தியானமே செய்து கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். இப்பொழுது தான் மஹாப்பெரியவாள் அவர்களை அழைத்துவரச் செய்து போதனைகள் செய்து கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள்.
ஒரு மணிக்குள் இப்படி சலித்துக் கொள்கிறீர்களே, அவர்கள் ஒரு சிறிய குறையைகூடச் சொல்லாமல் எவ்வளவு பொறுமையாக இருந்தார்கள் தெரியுமா என்று சிரித்துக்கொண்டே சொல்லிவிட்டு போய்விட்டார்கள். யாரோ என்னை ஓங்கி சம்மட்டியால் அடித்தது போல் இருந்தது.
இவ்வளவு வருஷங்களாக மஹா பெரியவாளுடன் இருந்துவிட்டு இப்படி கேவலமாக நடந்து கொண்டேனே என்று என்னை நானே நொந்துகொண்டேன். அந்த ஈஸ்வரனை புரிந்துகொள்ள நான் இன்னும் எவ்வளவு ஜென்மம் எடுக்க வேண்டுமோ தெரியவில்லையே என்று ஸ்தம்பித்து நின்றுவிட்டேன்.
அப்பொழுது மஹாப்பெரியவாள் சட்டென்று எங்கள் பக்கம் வந்து தரிசனம் தந்தார்கள். அந்த மஹானை தரிசித்து நான் செய்த தவறுக்காக அவரிடம் மானசீகமாக மன்னிப்பு கேட்டுக்கொண்டு அவசரமாக அந்த இடத்தைவிட்டு நகர்ந்து அந்த இரண்டு ஜெர்மனிய பெண்களை சந்தித்து பேசினேன். அப்பொழுது அவர்கள் இருவர் கண்களிலும் கண்ணீர் தாரைதாரையாக வழிந்து கொண்டிருந்தது. மஹாப்பெரியவாள் அவர்களுக்கு உபதேசம் செய்து கொண்டிருந்த பொழுதே அவர்கள் கண்களில் கண்ணீர் வழிந்ததை நாங்கள் பார்த்தோம்.
‘தயவுசெய்து மன்னியுங்கள். நீங்கள் இருவரும் வந்த காரணத்தை நாங்கள் அறிந்துகொண்டோம். நீங்கள் என்ன கேட்டீர்கள், அந்த மஹாஸ்வாமிகள் என்ன கூறினார்? உங்கள் சந்தேகங்கள் எல்லாம் தீர்ந்ததா?’ என்று கேட்டேன். அதற்கு அவர்கள் கொஞ்சநேரம் பேசவேயில்லை. அவர்கள் இந்த உலகத்திற்கு வருவதற்கே கொஞ்சம் நேரமாகிவிட்டது.
‘ஐயா! நாங்கள் இப்பொழுது ஆனந்த வெள்ளத்தில் திளைத்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறோம். எப்படி எங்கள் சந்தோஷத்தை உங்களோடு பகிர்ந்துகொள்ள முடியும் என்று தெரியவில்லை. அந்த மஹா ஸ்வாமிகளை உணரத்தான் முடியுமே தவிர அவற்றை வார்த்தைகளால் வர்ணிக்க எங்களுக்கு தெரியவில்லை. இந்த ஸ்வாமிகளை சந்திக்காமல் இவ்வளவு நாட்களை வீணே கழித்து விட்டோமே என்று வருத்தப்படுகிறோம்.
நாங்கள் இத்தனை வருடங்கள் வேதாந்தங்களைப் பற்றியும் சாஸ்திரங்களைப் பற்றியும் ஆராய்ச்சிகள் செய்து வந்தோம். ஆனால் இன்றுதான் எங்கள் ஜென்மா ஆனந்தம் அடைந்தது. இங்கே வருவதற்கு முன்னால், இந்த மஹானை தரிசித்து அருளுரை பெறுவதற்கு முன்னால் நாங்கள் இருவரும் எல்லாவற்றையும் படித்து முடித்து விட்டோம் என்று நினைத்திருந்தோம். ஆனால் இந்த பெரியவாளை தரிசித்த பிறகு நாங்கள் இன்னும் எங்கள் படிப்பை ஆரம்பிக்கவேயில்லை என்ற முடிவிற்கு வந்துவிட்டோம்.
(Before meeting His Holiness Sankaracharriar, we thought that we finished reading everthing. But after this meeting with His Holiness, we have come to a conclusion that we have not yet started the subject at all. He is really very great) என்று அனுபவித்து சொன்னார்கள்.
நம் ஸ்வாமிகளைப் பற்றி அன்னிய நாட்டவர்கள் சொன்னால்தான் நமக்கே அந்தப் பெரியவாளின் அருமையே புரிகிறது. அந்த வெளிநாட்டு பெண்களுக்கு இருந்த பொறுமை நம்மவர்களுக்க வருமா?
நிச்சயமாக எனக்கு வராது.
தாங்கள் இதுவரை கற்றதெல்லாம் ஒன்றும் இல்லை என்று தன்னை தாழ்த்திக்கொண்டு சொல்லக்கூடிய பக்குவம் நமக்கு வருமா? அல்லது அவர்களை போல் மூன்று நாட்கள் காத்திருந்து அதுவும் மஹாப்பெரியவாளின் உத்திரவு வரும்வரை நாம் காத்து கொண்டிருப்போமா?
ஆகவே என்னைவிட மஹா பெரியவாளை அந்த வெளிநாட்டவர்கள் அதிகமாக உணர்ந்திருக்கிறார்கள். அதுவும் அவர்களின் முதல் சந்திப்பிலேயே!
நமக்கும் அப்படி ஒரு உன்னதமான குணம் வர வேண்டுமானால் ‘கொஞ்சம் பொறுங்கள்’ காலம்தான் பதில்
சொல்ல வேண்டும்.”

Here is a small attempt to translate:
Sri Gurubhyo Namaha!
As usual even during that Ekadasi day I had gone to Sri Matam with my friend Gopu. In those days, Maha Periyava would give darshan at all/varied times.
He used to give darshan behind the Mutt, near the Mena (palanquin)that he used. When we went, the Saint was speaking with two women from a foreign country. The women were youngsters-about 25 years of age. We waited for about 45 minutes or so for Periyava’s Darshan. But Paramacharya continued speaking with those women and there was no one else (of the Mutt) around. We were curious to know what language Periyava was speaking to them. It was around 5.00 in the evening and I was getting impatient. I had to finish His darshan, then go to Kamakshi temple and then have to catch a bus to my native Vizhuppuram. I started getting restless.
Just then Brahmashri Vedapuri Shastriji came there and I spoke to him (Sri Vedapuri Shastriji has been in the service of Maha Periyava for about 60 years. Maha Periyava was his world. Paramacharya had instructed everyone in the Mutt, that Shri Vedapuri Shastriji has to be ONLY addressed as ‘Brahmashri’ and not by name).
I asked Brahmashri: “Can’t Periyava speak to such foreigners at some other time, there are devotees like me who are waiting for an hour. When do we finish Darshan and when do we return home?”
Brahmashri looked at me and said “you have been waiting for only one hour. These two foreigners have waited for 3 days and only today, that too just now Swamigal is speaking to them”.
All my curiosity came out. “who are they?, Why are they waiting for so many days? Why did you all at the Mutt did not arrange for their Darshan? I shot question after question to Brahmashri. He patiently answered: “they are from Germany and have completed their PhD in our Veda Shastras and Vedanta, from an American University. They asked their Professor if their education is complete or if they should study more. The American Professor told them about Paramacharya and asked them to meet him and get their doubts clarified saying, ‘He is the only one who can clear your doubts’. They came 3 days ago and asked Periyava their big doubt, if their education is complete’. Periyava looked at them keenly and said “just wait” and went off. From that time,they (the women) sat on a stone bench there and started doing ‘japam’ (meditation). Periyava didn’t even turn and look in that direction. When Periyava didn’ call them for a long time, the staff of the Mutt went to them and asked, ‘if you want we will remind him, that you are waiting. May be he has forgotten’.
The women replied to the staff:”No no, please don’t make that mistake (of asking him). HE knows when he should call us. His Holiness is a Great Saint”. Till HE decides to call us, we will stay in the Mutt and will continue to meditate”. For three days the women have been doing meditation and have only taken (eaten) only fruits and milk. Now, only a short while ago, Periyava has called them and ‘advising’ them.”
Brahmashri continued: “you are so impatient in one hour, you should have seen how patient those women were without even making a small complaint”. He laughed and went away.
I felt like someone hit me very hard with an iron club. I felt ashamed about my behaviour, despite being with Periyava for so long. I don’t know how many jenmas I have to take before understanding that Eshwara!
Just then, Periyava came to our place and gave Darshan. I quickly did darshan and also said a silent prayer for forgiveness for my mistake/impatience.
I moved away and spoke to the two German ladies, who were still in tears after meeting Paramacharya. I had seen that they had tears even as they were speaking to Him! I asked them: “we have heard about the purpose of your visit. What did you ask Periyava? What did he say? Are your doubts cleared. The women were quiet for sometime… it took them time to come back to reality/this world. They said “Sir, we are right now in an exhilarated state. we don’t know how to express or share our joy with you. HE is a Great Saint and HE can ONLY be FELT… we cannot express it in words. We are very sad that we have wasted so many years without meeting this Great Saint. We have been researching about Shastras and Vedanta for so many years. Till we came here we were thinking we have studied everything. Only after his Darshan we realise, we have not even begun our learning. He is really very great”.
I thought: We need to hear from foreigners to understand the greatness of our Swamigal. Will we ever have the patience of those two foreigners? At least I don’t have.
How humble were they to say ‘we haven’t learn anything’! How patient they have been till Periyava called them (that too after three days). And they have known more about Him (in the first visit itself!) than me.
When will we get such a great humility and patience? ‘Just Wait’. Only time can tell.

As Sri Nanjappa Sir has identified many foreigners in earleir days with Bagawan Sri Ramana and Sri Maha Periyava and with our Acharyas… Major Sadwik in those days… Recently I met Dr. Demitrian, He is a French MD in 90+ (no body can estimate his age from his appeal and walk) for Him everything is Only Maha Periyava and Sri Ramana… He said that are His eyes… He was directed to go Ramanasramam by Sri Maha Periyava… His chanting of ‘Narayana and Narayana’, ‘Easwara, Easwara’in every breath is to be experienced… He left his highly practising Medical Practise in France and came to India and moved with Sri Maha Periyava in camps and came to Tiruvannamalai as per His directions

Humbling experience , ennobling experience! We always want a Great Guru, but never think of our own fitness! In Vivekachudami, the Acharya talks of the qualifications of the sishyas too!
I remember an incident connected with Bhagavan Sri Ramana. He was always available to all, but some deserving souls obtained his grace in ways we cannot fathom. Some people felt that Bhagavan always showed more grace to foreign visitors. Once after the visit of Grant Duff some one expressed it also.. Bhagavan told them: ‘Look. This man is past 70, could have been happy in his place with his income, enjoying his life. Instead at this age, he chose to come on this trip, all alone, travelling over 6000 miles, not knowing our language, not accustomed to our ways, braving this hostile,hot weather! it is his longing for Peace that has brought him here.’
The implication is , that we are all here, always with the Guru, but taking him for granted. what do do do to deserve the grace?
