உப-சமீபத்தில், நயனம் – அழைத்துக் கொண்டு போகிறது. யாருக்கு ஸமீபத்தில் அழைத்துக் கொண்டு போகிறது? ஒருவனை குருவுக்கு ஸமீபத்தில் அழைத்துக் கொண்டு போகிறதுதான் உபநயனம். குரு யார்? வேதவித்துக்கள். உபநயனம் பிரம்மச்சரியத்துக்கு ஆரம்பம். அதன் முடிவு ‘ஸமாவர்த்தனம்’, உபநயனம் முதல் ஸமாவர்த்தனம் வரையில் இருப்பது ப்ரஹ்மச்சரியம். ஸமாவர்த்தனம் என்றால் திரும்பி வருகிறது என்று அர்த்தம். ஒரு இடத்துக்குப் போனால்தான் போன இடத்திலிருந்து திரும்பி வருவது என்பது முடியும். அகத்திலிருந்து குருகுலத்துக்குப் போய் வேத அத்யயனத்தைப் பூர்த்தி பண்ணிவிட்டு அகத்திற்குத் திரும்பி வருவதுதான் ஸமாவர்த்தனம். – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீசந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள்மொழிகள்

Upa=near; nayana=to take or lead (a child). Near whom or what is (the child) taken? Near the guru. That is what upanayana means. Who is a guru? One who has mastered the Vedas; Upanayana is initiation into the brahmacharya ashrama while “Samaavartana” is the completion of this stage of life. “Samaavartana” means “return”. To repeat, from the upanayana to the samaavartana is student-bachelorhood or the brahmacharya ashrama.
