பரமசிவனுக்கு உரிய ஐந்து அடையாளங்களில் பஸ்மமாகிய விபூதி ஒன்று; அவனுக்குப் பிரியமான மற்றோர் அடையாளம் ருத்ராக்ஷம். வில்வம் மற்றொன்று. பஸ்மம் சத்ய ஸ்வரூபமானது. அதை சாக்ஷாத் பரமசிவனுடைய ஸ்வரூபமே என்று சொல்லவேண்டும். ப்ரபஞ்சமெல்லாம் நசித்தாலும் தான் அழியாமல் இருப்பவன் பரமசிவன். உலகத்திலுள்ள பொருள்கள் எல்லாம் எரிந்துபோனால் பஸ்பமாகி விடுகிறது. அதை எரித்தால் அது அழிவதில்லை. சிவ ஸ்வரூபமும் அத்தகையதே.

Vibuthi is one of Lord Paramasiva’s five distinguishing marks. His other favorite distinguishing mark is Rudraksham. Vilvam is yet another one. Vibuthi (Basma) is Sathya Swaroopa. We should call Bhasma as Sakshath Paramasiva Swaroopam. When the entire galaxies get destroyed Paramasiva still remains. In this world, when anything is burnt it becomes ash.
