According to calculations worked out by qualified Panditas of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, namely, Brahmasri Seshadrinatha Shastrigal, Brahmasri Dinakara Sharma, Brahmasri Sundararama Vajapeyayaji and Brahmasri Shriramana Sharma, the Rg upakarma has to be observed on September 24, 2015 (Purattasi 8th). Mahesh, I will send the document detailing this, please upload the same here for members’ benefit.
As per Pambu Panchangam Rigveda Upakarma on 24 Sept. 2015 .. Some group ,as you mentioned since thiruvonam is on 28 aug 2015, we can perform Upakarma on the day also. Pl. clarify this point and also pl. explain on what basis Upakarma date finalize, based on thiruonum star or something more than that.

Also, please start using the appropriate terminology for this celebration. It should be called Upakarma and not as Avani Avittam. Upakarma came to be called as Avani Avittam because the Upakarma day would sometimes occur in the Avani month under the Avittam nakshatram. But this is not the case always and it can even occur in the Aadi month or even as late as in Purattasi, too. Tthe deciding factor for this observation is Chandramana Shravana Pournami, and it is not even necessary that the Avittam nakshatram be in ascendance that day. We may see that during the sankalpam, too, we recite “shravanyam pournamasyam”. Hence, please avoid using Avani Avittam, which is a total misnomer.

Very well explained Sir(Sri Sudarshaniyer). Thanks for the clarification as we had a debate in our home that when Rig Veda upakarma is on 24th sep how can it be called Avani Avittam.
The above is true about Rg Vediya Upakarma. This was decided at the Panchanga sadas held in Kanchipuram earlier this month after great deliberations. Please check with Srimatam for more details.
