Gayanthri Mantra Mahatmiyam article from Sri Kanchi Matam

gayathri_mantrain 2014, when I got a darshan of HH Pudhu Periyava, I updated about an initiative where interested folks can join to do Sunday sahasra gayathri, He was happy to note. I requested Him for anugrahabashanam to those who have started doing this. Due to His health, He was unable to do so. Instead, He gave me this book – a very short book in Tamil that talks about gayathri mantra. It also contains samithadhaanam procedure for all vedas.

When we tried this with few folks few months back, for some unknown reason, it did not proceed. Now, with Hari Ramasubbu‘s sincere efforts, there are about 60+ folks in US who are doing sahasra gayathri japam on Sundays – adiyen is one among those folks….He has created a Whatsapp group and it is truly amazing how Hari has pulled this together. He is doing monthly anusha puja with 80+ members – in my opinion, probably the largest gathering in US. It is not a joke. Influencing one to watch a movie is easy – not for something like this. One has to lead by example – Hari is one who is leading the entire Dallas Periyava devotees by example. Salute to Hari for all his efforts! Mahaperiyava’s blessings is very evident for Hari and his family.

Hari & I are talking about how this can be launched in various parts of the world though their own network. From software perspective, it is easier to come up with an app. However, getting like-minded people and making them to do consistently is the final goal….Hopefully, more folks get motivated by this initiative and form their own satsang and do it, track it on a regular basis.

  4. @balakrishnaniyer and Sreedhar,

Appreciate your commitment in doing Madyanikam. But it may be done only after 2 hours 24 minutes after sunrise called “sangava kala”. according Mahaperiyava.

    • The special dispensations given by a Mahaan or your Aathu Vadhyar or your home elders are not set in stone. It is like administering medicine by adjusting the dosage according to the kala desha vartamaanam. When Mahaperiyavaa gave that dispensation (2hr 24 minutes), offices started at 10 am and once could leave the house at 9:30am and be at work by 10am. Nowadays, this is not possible.

To wit, in Chennai’s Kanchi Mahaswami Mandir School (run by our Matham), children do Madhyannikam at 7:15am, keeping in mind the changed circumstances.

In these matters, please consult your Guru / Acharya / Vadhyar / Family elders and go by their advice which will differ according to the times we live in. The most important thing in following Shastras is not to grant dispensations to oneself, based on convenience.

If one starts insisting that we should follow only one way or the highway, one should read Vaidyanatha Dikshitiyam on how to conduct a Parvana Sraddham. Not a single person will qualify to satisfy the conditions these days! Nevertheless the Acharyas urge us to do the Sraddham to the best of our ability as advised by our house Vadhyar with Sraddha.

Here’s an example given by Sarma Sastrigal who has been tasked by our Bala Periyavaa to write various books on the dharma sastram these days:

      • I was pointing out in case you are not aware of it. If you are aware of it, good and thanks for clarifying.

  5. Can I have this in Telugu ?

  6. While I am greatly impressed by the earnestness of those who are trying to do the nithya karmas, I would like to warn about two important aspects and I would request the sadhakas not to misunderstand me.
One our current materialistic pursuits will not allow us to complete the full complement of vaidika karma – paratha snanam, pratha sandhi, agnihotram, nithya pooja, alaya darsanam, madyanika snanam, madhyanikam, vyswadevam, bhojanam, purana pandanam, sayam snanam, sayam sandhi, devatha Aradhanai, alaya darsanam. We can only beg forgiveness from our paramakarunamurthi our Guru for the current state of affairs we are in.
Second we should not forget the essentials of samanya dharmam – ahimsai, sathyam, saucham, asthyeyam and indriya nighraham. Without this there is no use of vaidika karmas. The world will be a better place with us following the samanya dharmam. Kindly excuse me for striking a jarring note.

    Regards

    • @ N.Subramanan: While I appreciate your intentions on this with a jarring note (as you mentioned), let me share this for you.

Think of two things here, i.e., Karma Anushtana and Samanya Dharma. To attain any one, you ought to proclaim the grip of other. In other words both are inseparable. Leaving any one will not allow you to reach the other. Hence it is advised by our ancestors to follow Nitya Karma Anushtana to achieve Sadaiv Samanya Dharma and vice versa. Going to School is Karma Anushtana…. Studying with focused mind is Samanya Dharma. You cannot say, ‘I will go to school but won’t study’ or ‘I won’t go to school but study’. Both are meaningless.

I understand the present materialistic world affairs wherein we lost ourselves and our culture at least in the past 5 decades. Please be awaken and arise now to be enlighten. Unless a step is put forward, you will never come out of your house. Unless the ‘Sankalpam’ is made in you mind that you would try and try until you accomplish.

I had experienced it personally………would you mind in giving a try Bratha?

      • Dear Balaji and Brother,
I do read your replies and I have noticed your intensity and fervour in following our Vaidika dharmam. I’m trying in my limited way to practice our dharmam.
But what I wrote is out of anguish on seeing the happenings for the past three decades especially after liberalisation. Simple thing saucham where is it! Only if society follows some norms can we ensure that I hope you understand what I mean.

        Regards

      • Namaskaram Sri Subramanian garu!

I got your point and understood your anguish, but that is the realty of our present society. We are one among that society is not to be forgotten in this regard. Knowingly and unknowingly we do make mistakes but if they are not corrected after it came to our understanding (Pashyatapa), then we are really doing a sin. After all we are humans, let’s do mistakes if we don’t heed our elders (ancestors). Let’s correct those mistakes (Praychitam) and march forward. That’s how I think is the best way one can follow, preach and protect our peerless Dharma – Sanatana! Rest Krushna will take care of!

        ” ananyāś cintayanto māḿ
        ye janāḥ paryupāsate
        teṣāḿ nityābhiyuktānāḿ
        yoga-kṣemaḿ vahāmy aham ”

(One who is unable to live for a moment without Kṛṣṇa consciousness cannot but think of Kṛṣṇa twenty-four hours a day, being engaged in devotional service by hearing, chanting, remembering, offering prayers, worshiping, serving the lotus feet of the Lord, rendering other services, cultivating friendship and surrendering fully to the Lord. Such activities are all auspicious and full of spiritual potencies, which make the devotee perfect in self-realization, so that his only desire is to achieve the association of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Such a devotee undoubtedly approaches the Lord without difficulty. This is called yoga. By the mercy of the Lord, such a devotee never comes back to this material condition of life. Kṣema refers to the merciful protection of the Lord. The Lord helps the devotee to achieve Kṛṣṇa consciousness by yoga, and when he becomes fully Kṛṣṇa conscious the Lord protects him from falling down to a miserable conditioned life.)

I really beg your pardon, in any manner I did hurt you. Sarvam Krushnaarpanam!

  7. Just do it. We must apply our minds to it steadily.Laziness will have to be overcome.Even if there are some misses initially, it will become a habit and bring immense good to all who practise Sandhya Vandhanam and Gayathri Japam regularly. May Maha Periyava Bless and Guide our sincere efforts. Hara Hara Shankara, Jaya Jaya Shankara!

  8. Me too is interested in participating in “Gaayathry Mahamandra Yagyam”.kindly include me in your list.

  9. No words to express my gratitude towards Shri Mahesh and Hari Ramasubu. Everybody should recite Mahagayathri without fail.

  10. I hope we don’t ask for an App for sleeping, eating, drinking and other daily routines. Hope we will soon have a “pooja”bot dressed like a ganapadigal. On a ligther note, can “siri” tell gayatri when asked?
While satsang is great, certain things need to be a personal process and part of your breath. What’s the use of the air that goes in and comes out? We need to understand why we exhale CO2?
Manadhil Irukkum Asuthathai Ellam Veliyera Veliyera we approach paramartha disha towards parabrahman. And gayatri when part of the inhaling process amplifys the purification of blood and mind.
Jeevan mukthas are those who no longer have any impurities. So they are human-trees. They inhale and exhale oxygen with high concentration. So this special exhaled invisible air which comes out from them creates an apurva-tejas!

    • Jokes apart – one question:
How could we use technology (beyond information share and networking) to promote athma darshan?
I believe technology – more so AI, has the supreme power to guide us in the line of Dharma.
Imagine how would it be if there existed a Dharma Shaastra/veda trained recommendation engine.
In real time, it can alert if you are doing an adharma karya. And it can be augmented into poonal as a wearable (dharmic) device. Hope some Brahmins encode intelligence into themselves too.

      • You will find many such people mute that device due to irritation or devise will hang as there would be so many alerts to be sent quickly and still keep a watch or non belivers will spread virus to attack.

  11. I think commitment (Shradhdha) is more important than procedure and counts. It does not mean not to learn those areas. Those are equally important once you are on track. If you concentrate and linger on only methods and procedure and not involving your mind in Japa and Dhyana……. What is the fruit of all these? Please correct me if I am wrong.

    Periva padabi vandanam!

  12. Acharya says that Maadhyanigam shall be done by 8.30 AM. But the problem is that many of the office goers like me has to start for office by 8 AM and someone of them even much earlier.

I have been doing Pradha sandhya by 6.15 am; Maadhyanigam by 6.40 am; After Maadhyanigam, I do Brahmayagnam. All together I complete nithya karmas by 7am. Since I do not have any alternative I have been doing like this. On holidays, I do saayam sandhya too.

Could there be a better way?

    • You could perhaps look at the schedule followed by the children at srikanchimahaswamividyamandir, Raja Kilpakkam Chennai. This is with Nadu Periyava and Bala Periyava’s blessings and the vedic teachers are teaching Vedam according to the Shakas of the children. It is not very different from what you are doing.

These children do Prata Sandhi at 6 am and have a break for milk and come back and do Madhyannikam at 7:15 am. The attend regular English medium classes during the day and come back for lunch at 12:30pm.

My point is, there appears to be a practical solution based on the situation even in the place where the upkeep of the Vaidic Dharma is the foremost goal.

So I’m sure you can consult with your “Aathu Vadhuiyar: and continue doing what you are doing..

As the Shradha and the commitment increases, and one gets the Ruchi and “mental peace” of doing anushtanams, the Guru in yourself will give you directions, the enthusiasm and methods to keep up to the rigorous shastra standards of doing things at the proper time, increasing the number of Japam to 1008 etc.

As the Nike commercial says, “Just Do it!” – which you already are doing. You haven take 1 step with sincerity and there is no doubt Maha Periyavaa will take 10 steps towards you!

      • Excuse my typos!

      • Hi

Madhyanikam should be done after 10:00 a.m, there are exceptions which are given in Vaidhyanatha Dikshitiyam when we do madhyanikam in the morning itself. During those period, prayashchitta arghyam needs to be performed. since we are not doing it on that particular time. Even after coming from office hours befor e 10p.m once can do saayam sandhya with prayashchitta arghya performed. But none of the sandhayas should be skipped. If we skip trikala sandhyavandana for three days continuously, one has to wear new yajnopavitam, then do the prayaschittam , then start the sandhyavandana kriya.

        Thanks

  13. Great thought…. great initiative by Sri Hari….. very encouraging and inspiring. Do post such initiatives in future also Mahesh Garu.

  14. Why don’t you all do Gaayathri Japa daily instead of postponing it to Sunday? ( 108+32+64 = 204 per day }
In a week you would have done more than 1000+ Gaayathri Japa.

    • What you say is true for those who had not missed earlier chanting Gayathri regularly or who had not done anything wrong to loose Brahmanyam.

I think what periava has prescribed to do Gayathri on every Sunday 1000 is for those defaulters.

      • Let me correct few things.

What periyava said as sunday sahasra gayathri is on top of our nithya karma (108+32+64) daily. So adding this up and calling it as 1000 does not count….On top of this, we all should do 1008 on Sundays.
