When Smt DK Pattammal was seven years old, she had the rarest opportunity of taking the blessings of Mahaperiyava of Kanchi Mutt, His Holiness Sri Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi Swamigal. She was a regular visitor to the Kanchi mutt and her father would always insist on her to chant slokas in the mutt regularly after having dharshan at Kanchipuram Kamakshi Amman Temple.

Having noticed the little girl’s potential, Mahaperiyava personally requested DKP’s father to bring DKP to Esanur (when she was only 7 or 8 years of age) where he was stationed for observing the Chathurmasya Vratha. He wanted Krishnaswami Dhikshithar to participate during the Navarathri Pooja and wanted Young Pattammal to sing during his nine day Pooja.

DKP remembered with gratitude how Mahaperiyavaa himself offered the coconut kept in the Navarathri kalasam to DKP’s father and asked him to make Payasam (Kheer) out of the coconut and give it to the little kid. In her later days, she fondly remembered this incident and always believed that her success was due to the rarest blessings that she received from Mahaperiyavar!

There is an interesting story behind Anandeshvarena, Muthuswamy Deekshithar krithi in anandhabhairavi ragam. Once, D.K. Pattammal went to Kanchipuram, had darshan of the Kanchi Paramacharya and sang this song before him. The Paramacharya after expressing appreciation, asked her to desist from singing the song in concerts. The song according to Him ought to be sung only for pujas, in the presence of Sanyasis and Yatis, and in temples.

She says, “As a child I sang everyday before the Paramacharya of Kanchi. He said that I was blessed with Vak suddham, impeccable clarity in diction.” That was a great asirvadam blessing for me!”

Another story: When little DKP was a two month old child, her parents took her to Tiruvannamalai, where she received the blessings of Sri Ramana Maharishi Who seems to have fed her some honey and He was delighted when the little child enjoyed the taste. DKP in her later days shared that may be her diction and perfect rendition which she is popular for is due to the rare blessings of Sri Ramana Maharishi Himself.

  5. Periavva giving coconut is not the ordinary and I have personally known it. In a village unknown when we were struggling to give food to a full crowd with both time and groceries constraint periyava himself puts the broken coconut and filled us full and the most simple and tasty food in the world
