Thanks to Karthi Nagarathnam for posting one of the finest paragraphs on what Periyava had said about doing “seva”…..Highly encouraging for all of us here who are part and parcel of running this blog…At times, I think “What a big difference this blog is going to make?” As Periyava said here, whether or not this blog makes a difference in you, this makes a big difference in me! When I post something, I read, understand and feel for the content. That is the biggest gain for me!!!! It is so touching that Periyava remembered Rs 1 and 5 contribution all the time!!

Let us all get involved in doing seva – no matter how small it is. As long it is bagavat seva, nothing else matters.

இதனாலெல்லாம் என்ன பெரிய ப்ரயோஜனம் வந்துவிடப் போகிறது என்று நினைக்கக் கூடாது. ராமாயண அணில் நமக்கெல்லாம் முன்னுதாரணம். அத்தனாம் பெரிய ஸேது பந்தத்தில், ‘நாம் அல்ப ஜந்து, என்ன பெரிய ஸஹாயம் பண்ணமுடியும்?’ என்று அது நினைத்ததா? அது பண்ணின ஸேவை ராமருக்கு என்ன உபகாரம் பண்ணிற்றோ பண்ணவில்லையோ, அதற்கே பெரிய உபகாரம் பண்ணி விட்டது – ஸ்ரீராமனின் கருணையை, கர ஸ்பரிசத்தை ஸம்பாதித்துத் தந்துவிட்டது. இப்படி ‘நாம் என்ன பண்ணி கிழிக்கப் போகிறோம்?’ என்று ஒதுங்கியில்லாமல், நம்மாலான தொண்டு செய்தால், மற்றவருக்கு நம்மால் நல்லது நடந்தாலும் நடக்காவிட்டாலும் நமக்கு ஈஸ்வரப் பிரஸாதம் கிடைத்து சித்த சுத்தி லபித்துவிடும்.

ராமாயண அணில் மாதிரி இரண்டு பேரை என் lifetime-ல் நினைக்கிறேன். (1944 பிப்ரவரியில்) காஞ்சீபுரத்தில் காமாக்ஷிக்குப் பெரிசாகக் கும்பாபிஷேகம் பண்ணினபோது, திருநெல்வேலியில் ஏதோ சின்ன கடை வைத்திருந்த ஒருவர், ‘என்னால் இதற்குமேல் பண்ணச் சக்தி இல்லையே!’ என்று மனஸார வருத்தப்பட்டு நீளமாக எனக்கு ஒரு கடிதாசு எழுதி, ஒரு ரூபாய் மணிஆர்டர் பண்ணியிருந்தார். இதேமாதிரி இளையாத்தங்குடியில் ரொம்பப் பெரிசா முதல் ஸதஸ் (1962 நடைபெற்ற ஆகம-சில்ப-வ்யாஸ பாரத-கிராமகலா-வித்வத்-ஸதஸ்) நடத்தினபோது சென்னையிலிருந்து ஒருத்தர் ஐந்து ரூபாய் அனுப்பி வைத்து, பெரிய டொனேஷன்களோடுகூட இந்த அல்பக் காணிக்கையையும் அங்கீகரிக்க வேண்டும் என்று பிரார்த்தித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார். பெரிய டொனேஷனெல்லாம் மறந்து போனாலும், அந்த ஒரு ரூபாயும், இந்த அஞ்சு ரூபாயும் என் மனஸை விட்டுப் போகவில்லை.

முன்னேயே நான் திரும்பத் திரும்பச் சொன்ன மாதிரி நம்முடைய தானம், தொண்டு இவற்றால் மற்றவர்கள் லாபமடைந்தாலும், அடையாவிட்டாலும் நம்முடைய மனஸின் அஹங்காரம் நிச்சயமாகக் குறையும். ஸங்கமாக எல்லாரும் சேருவதால் ஸமூஹத்தில் ஸெளஜன்யம் உண்டாகும். எல்லாரும் சேர்ந்து குளம் வெட்டினால், அப்போது கொஞ்சம் கொஞ்சம் நம் அஹம்பாவத்தையும் வெட்டி எடுக்கிறோம். குளத்தில் ஜலம் வருவதைவிட நம் நெஞ்சில் ஈரம் வருகிறதே, அது போதும்! இந்த ஈரம், அன்பு, அருள் பரமாத்ம ஸ்வரூபத்தை நாம் உணருவதற்குப் பிரயோஜனமாகும். ‘பகவானிடத்தில் பக்தி வரவேண்டும், அவனருள் கிடைக்க வேண்டும்’ என்றால் எப்படி வரும்? பரோபகாரம் பண்ணி மனஸ் பக்குவமானால்தான் நிஜ பக்தி வரும். ஈஸ்வராநுக்ரஹமும் வரும்.

அநாதைக் குழந்தைகளின் ஸம்ரக்ஷணை, திக்கற்ற ஏழைகளுக்கு ஸேவாஸதனம் வைப்பது, ப்ராணி வதையைத் தடுப்பது பசு வளர்ப்பது, பசிக்கஷ்டம் யாருக்கும் வராமல் உபசரிப்பது என்றிப்படி எந்தெந்த விதத்தில் முடியுமோ அப்படி நம் அன்பை, வெறும் பேச்சாக இல்லாமல், கார்யத்தில் காட்டினால் பரமேஸ்வரனின் அன்பு நமக்கும் கிடைக்கும்.

We should never think ‘What is the big use of doing this?’ The squirrel in Ramayanam is an example for all of us. Did it think, ‘Oh! What is the help we can render in such a big project ‘Sethu Bandhanam’ ? Whether its service rendered any help to Sri Raman or not, it helped the squirrel itself in a big way !–It earned the Karunyam (Love) and the caress of Sri Raman. Same way, if we also render whatever service we can, without thinking ‘What is the big difference my service is going to make?’, and keeping ourselves away, whether it is going to help others or not, it will certainly fetch us ‘Prasadham’ from Eswaran and also ‘purity of mind’.

I think of two particular persons in my life time, like the ‘Squirrel in Ramayana’,

When we performed Kumbabishekam of Sri Kamakshi temple in Kancheepuram in Feb. 1944 in a big way, a person who owned a small shop in Tirunelveli had sent me a long letter expressing ‘his inability to donate more than this’ along with a money order for ONE RUPEE. Likewise, when we conducted a big Conference –ஸதஸ் (Agama–Silpa–Vyasa Bharatha–Gramakala vidhvath) in 1962 in Ilaiyaththankudi, a person from Chennai had sent FIVE RUPEES, requesting me to accept the small donation along with the big donations and bless him. Though I forgot the big donations, these two donations of One rupee and FIVE rupees never left my mind.

As I had already mentioned repeatedly, whether others benefit from our Dharmam or service, the arrogance in us will certainly come down. When all the people in the society join together, cordiality will prevail among all. When all join together and dig a pond, we will also dig out some of our arrogance along with it. The love and affection that ooze out from our mind, is enough and more than the water that oozes out in the pond ! That love and affection will help us realize ‘Paramatma Swaroopam’. We want to develop Devotion towards Eswaran and we want His ‘Anugraham; how will we get them? When we render help and service to others only, our mind will become suitable/eligible, to have TRUE BAKTHI and receive Eswaran’s blessing.

Caring for orphans, establishing service centres for the poor, preventing torture to animals, Gho Samrakshana, feeding the hungry –there are many many services like these. If we can render any such service,—not merely talking about it—- we will receive the Love of Parameswaran.
