Here is the English translation of the above post.

MahaPeriava, who took over as the 68th Matathipathi (head) of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, in 1907, at the tender age of 13 years,

who walked this earth for hundred years amongst us, the lowly earthlings that we are,

who uplifted us with His, nectar—like speech,

who practiced what the Sastras preached without compromising even the minutest bit, and

who, even today, blesses those who surrender to Him with their soul and mind, was requested to give an Upanyasam on the evening of the day He ascended the throne, by some elders of the SriMatam.

Kumbalonam was thronged by a sea of people. An elderly person, looked at this ‘Bala Sanyasi’ with surprise and curiosity.

“The 66th Peetathipathi used to deliver beautiful Upanyasams. His power of speech used to attract everyone. But…..He…..seems a tender child ! What is that He is going to talk?”—the old bloke came and sat in the front with a lot of doubt in his mind.

It was the first Upanyasam (discourse) of Periava. It was on how the ‘SYAMANTHAKAMANI’ was missing; how SriKrishna was censured; how He fought with Jambavan, and married Jambavathi, how He got back the ‘Syamanthakamani’ and returned it and how He cleared Himself. All those who heard the Upanyasam were overwhelmed with joy and wondered ,’Oh! What a wonderful Upanyasam this was!’

The elderly person (who doubted His ability to deliver Upanyasam), came running to Him and fell at His feet, “Oh! Lord !” He then turned to the crowd and spoke, “ I had the great ‘Bagyam’ (fortune) of listening to many an upanyasam of Kalavai Periaval (66th Peetathipathi). I thought what this ‘child’ is going to talk in HIS tender age of 13 ! But in His first Upanyasam itself, He proved that He is an able successor to Him. I tender my wholehearted apology. I am unable to control my emotions now, because, when I think ‘ I am already past 80 years. How many more Upanyasams by this Acharyar, I will be fortunate to listen to?’, I become very emotional and hence unable to control my crying.”—The elderly person cried, unable to control his emotions.

That was some accolade from a very staunch devotee of Periava’s ParamaGuru!

  1. These are just fanciful narrations. May not have actually happened. Understandable since no such episode described in any of the historical narrations including from Sri Mahaperiyava Himself.
However imaginative narrations are purely intended to inspire more devotion in the minds of Sishyas. So acceptable.
We should not worry whether it is Kumbhakonam or Kalavai etc for the same reason.
    My devotion remains always

  2. I am not able to control my tears rolling when i read this yesterday in Fb as well as now !! Periyava Charanam Sharanam yields us His Kataksham! Shankara!

  3. Respected Bhakthas,

Maha Periyava took sanyasa at Kalavai, but this incident quoting that on the same evening he did upanyasam in Kumbakonam. Can someone clarify?

    Thanks
    Venkat

  4. Reblogged this on V's ThinkTank.

  5. Nice translation. Thanks very much.
But I was wondering if I could make a small suggestion. I refer to the term ‘bloke’ used a few times in the translation. The old devotee had his doubts about the ‘Bala Periyavas’ ability to give a Pravachanam. But later, after the Pravachanam, makes a public apology for his earlier attitude. I think, considering his age (& ultimately) his humility, calling him a ;bloke’ sounds a little disrespectful. Just my thought.
Thanks once again for the speedy translation though
