Panchamukha Periyava Lingam

I like Shivalingams – particularly panchamukha lingams. I don’t have one at home…Haven’t really found one that I liked….Giri traders carry some – but didn’t have sharp features of the face etc….In fact, this shiva linga looks so good!

We call Periyava as Parameswaran. Also there are lots of stories where devotees saw Periyava instead of shiva linga in a temple and one swamiji in Rishikesh (HH Venkateswaranandha) had a dream of Periyava in shivalinga. Why aren’t there any shivalingams with Periyava faces like this one? We can use such lingams at home for our nithya puja etc…For temple prathishta, all agama sastras might come in the way – we can avoid that…We can ask some of our sthapathi friends to consider this suggestion….

  1. jaya jaya sankara hara hara sankara lord hara hara mahaadeva sambho sankara

  2. Kanchi Mahaperiyava live in our hearts. Besides he was very strict in following the vedic traditions. The idea of worshipping him in Linga form may not be correct. While we all rever Mahaperiava as Avatharam, my humble opinion is that we need not necessarily see him in Linga form. Hara Hara Shankara Jaya Jaya Shankara!!

  3. Hara Hara Shankara, Jaya Jaya Shankara

  4. I have visited a small temple near the Sri kalahasti temple on a small hill posited dewoswam office this was once a ruined temple while mahapeeriva visited srikalahsthi long time back this shivalingam as big as chennai trisulam temple with five faced I had opportunity to do abhisekam with Ganga water gifted to me by ganagasweets owner, and broke coconut put some forest flowers on the Lingala. Similarly there is a panchamuga lingam temple old one under one put person doing daily pooka array too. If mahapeeriva devotees visit kalahasti pl do visit the panchamuga lingam it is really we have to see one day in our life who was worshiped by mahapeeriva and sat before this great shiva lingam which has five faces one face was above seeing the sky too so beautiful which iam unable to write a poetry as am only engr.

  5. As much as i would agree paramachrya is none other than Parameswara, I strongly disagree with this idea. the key phrase above is If sastras come in the way of doing something, then we should not do it as what Paramacharya would say. As Paramacharya’s Sishays we would not do it. Then we would like baba devotees. There is a difference. Paramacharya’s practices are always in conformity with tradition. Those that are lucky will get his darshan in Linga form in their dreams. But we giving importance to tradition should worship only his photos and his Murtis.

  6. It is all a state of mind. Though Lord Siva and Maha Periyava are the same Parabrahmam, it is better that Shiva Linga and Maha Periyava Vigrahams remain separate. The Bhava should be there. This is my personal opinion. Hara Hara Shankara, Jaya Jaya Shankara! At Sringeri Adhishtaanams, they have the BhaNa Lingas which are covered by a Silver Kavacham with the Acharya’s Face, but still they remain separate! Hara Hara Shankara, Jaya Jaya Shankara!

  7. Dear Mahesh,
I feel this suggestion may not be to the liking of Mahaperiava himself. Consult some top Pandits who know Periava and His miind very well before venturing on this project.
Periava himself may guide you right.
