“வீட்டைக் கட்டிப் பார்; கல்யாணம் பண்ணிப் பார் ” என்று ஹிமாலய சாதனையாக சொல்லுவதற்கு ஏற்றபடி தன் பெண்ணுக்கு ஒரு பணக்கார ஜமீன்தார் வீட்டுப் பையனை சம்பந்தம் பேசி கல்யாணமும் பண்ணிவைத்தார் ஒருத்தர்.
கல்யாண சமயத்தில் பெண்ணுக்கு தங்க நகைகள் வாங்க தோதுப்படவில்லை. எனவே கவரிங் நகைகளைப் போட்டு நடத்திவிட்டார். நாலைந்து மாதங்களில் திடீரென்று ஜமீந்தாருக்கு ஏதோ பண நெருக்கடி! எனவே நாட்டுப்பெண்ணின் கழுத்திலும்,கைகளிலும் இருந்த நகைகளை கழற்றித் தரச்சொல்லி மார்வாடி கடைக்கு கொண்டு போனார் மாமனார். போன இடத்தில் அத்தனையும் கவரிங் என்று போட்டு உடைத்தார் மார்வாடி!
“சேச்சே ! எத்தனை அவமானம்! இப்டி ஏமாத்திட்டானே சம்பந்தி ப்ராம்மணன்!”.கோபாக்னி தாண்டவமாட நேரே வீட்டுக்கு வந்தார்; வந்த வேகத்தில்,நாட்டுப் பெண்ணை பொட்டி படுக்கையோடு பிறந்த வீட்டுக்கு அனுப்பிவிட்டார்!
இதில் அழகு என்னவென்றால் இந்த ஜமீன்தார் அடிக்கடி மடத்துக்கு வருபவர்! ஒருநாள் எதேச்சையாக சில நண்பர்களுடன் பெரியவாளை தர்சனம் பண்ண வந்தார் ஜமீன்தார். பெரியவா சிரித்துக்கொண்டே கூட வந்த நண்பர்கள் எல்லாரிடமும் க்ஷேமலாபங்கள் விஜாரித்தார்; ஜமீந்தாரைத் தவிர!
அதோடு நில்லாமல், மீதிப் பேரிடம் பேசிவிட்டு “படக்”கென்று எழுந்து உள்ளே போய்விட்டார். ஜமீந்தாருக்கோ “சுரீர்”ரென்றது! “என்ன அபச்சாரம் பண்ணினேனோ தெரியலியே! பெரியவா என் பக்கமே திரும்பலியே! ஒரு வார்த்தை கூட பேசலியே!” உள்ளுக்குள் மறுகினார். அங்கே இருந்த ஒரு வைதீகரை அணுகி ” என்னமோ தெரியலே, பெரியவா எம்மேல ஏன் பாராமுகமா இருக்கார்?ரொம்ப மனசுக்கு கஷ்டமா இருக்கு….நீங்க பெரியவாட்ட கொஞ்சம் எனக்காக சொல்லுவேளா?” ஏறக்குறைய அழுதே விட்டார்.
வைதீகரும் கொஞ்சம் ஸ்வாதீனமாக பெரியவாளிடம் பேசக்கூடியவராகையால் உள்ளே போய் பெரியவாளிடம் ஜமீன்தாரின் முறையீட்டை சொன்னார்.
“அவன் பண்ணியிருக்கறது ரொம்ப கேவலமான கார்யம்! தன்னோட ஆத்துக்கு வந்த மஹாலக்ஷ்மிய ஒதைச்சு அனுப்பினது ரொம்ப தப்பு! பொண்ணையும் நாட்டுப் பொண்ணையும் சமமா பாவிக்கணும். ஆயிரம் பொய் சொல்லி கல்யாணம் பண்ணலாம்..ன்னு சாஸ்திரம் சொல்றது. இவனோட சம்பந்தி பாவம் ஏழை; தங்க நகை போடலே;போட முடியலே! ஏன்? இவன்தான் ஜமீந்தாராச்சே! நாட்டுப் பொண்ணுக்கு தங்கத்ல நகை பண்ணிப் போடறதுதானே? அதோட, நாட்டுப் பொண்ணோட நகையை மார்வாடிக் கடைல அடகு வெக்கறதுக்கு இவனுக்கு அதிகாரமில்லே!” எரிமலையென பொரிந்து தள்ளிவிட்டார்!
வெளியே வந்த வைதீகர் சொன்ன விஷயங்களைக் கேட்டதும் ஜமீன்தாரின் சப்தநாடியும் ஒடுங்கி விட்டது! பெரியவாளுக்கு அத்தனையும் தெரிந்திருக்கிறதே! ஓடிப் போய் பெரியவாளுடைய பாதங்களில் விழுந்து மன்னிப்பு கேட்டார்.
“என்னை மன்னிச்சிடுங்கோ பெரியவா.ரொம்ப தப்பு பண்ணிட்டேன்! நாளைக்கே போயி என் நாட்டுப் பொண்ணை அழைச்சிண்டு வந்துடறேன்” என்று ரொம்ப கெஞ்சினார்.
எரிமலையாக சீரிய பெரியவா, தப்பை உணர்ந்தவுடன் ஹிமயமலையாக குளிர்ந்து பேசினார். “பொண்களை மொதல்ல மதிக்கணும். பிரியமா நடத்தணும். ஆத்துல பொண்கள் கண் கலங்கக் கூடாது! நாளைக்கே போயி அழைச்சிண்டு வந்து சந்தோஷமா ஓன் பொண்ணாட்டம் நடத்து. க்ஷேமமா இருங்கோ!” ப்ரஸாதம் குடுத்து அனுப்பினார்

English translation
“Construct a house and see, conduct a wedding and see”. True to this statement, it was a difficult thing for this particular man who finalized negotiations with a rich Zamindar and married off his daughter to the Zamindar’s son.
During the wedding, he was unable to purchase gold ornaments for his daughter and hence he conducted the wedding by using ‘covering’ jewels instead. 5-6 months after the wedding, the Zamindar was suddenly faced with some cash problems. He requested his daughter-in-law to hand over her jewels and took them to the pawn shop. There the Marwari broke the news to him that all the jewels were ‘covering’ jewels.
“I have been insulted. I have been cheated by this Sambandhi Brahmin”. Furious, he returned home and sent his daughter-in-law to her parents’ house.
The icing on the cake was that the Zamindar used to be a regular at the Kanchi Matham. A few days after this incident, the Zamindar happened to visit the Kanchi Matham along with a few of his friends. Periyava smiled and spoke well with all of them – except the Zamindar !
Not only that, after speaking with the rest of them, Periyava suddenly got up and went inside. The Zamindar was crestfallen. “I don’t know what mistake I have committed. Periyava did not even look in my direction. HE did not speak even one word with me.” He was extremely dejected. He approached a priest associated with the Matham and told him, “I don’t know why Periyava is angry with me. I’m feeling very sad. Can you please talk to Periyava and find out ?”, he pleaded, literally in tears.
Since this priest was close to Periyava, he slowly went inside and carefully brought up this topic with Periyava.
“What he has done is abhorrent. He has kicked out the Mahalakshmi who has come to his house and it is a sin. One should treat one’s daughter-in-law like one’s own daughter. Shastrams says it is ok to lie a hundred times in order to conduct a wedding. His Sambandhi is a poor man; he could not afford to buy gold ornaments for his daughter. But he is a Zamindar, right ? Why could he not buy gold ornaments for his daughter-in-law ? Moreover, he has no right to take his daughter-in-law’s jewels and pledge them.” Periyava fumed like a volcano
When the priest came out and conveyed all this to the Zamindar, he stood stunned. How does Periyava know all this ? He ran and fell at Periyava’s feet and begged for forgiveness.
“Forgive me Periyava. I have sinned. I will go tomorrow itself and bring my daughter-in-law back”, he pleaded.
Periyava who had fumed like a volcano just a little while earlier, cooled down as soon as He saw that the Zamindar had realized his mistake. HE now spoke gently, “We should first respect women. We should treat them lovingly. Ladies at home should not shed tears. Bring her back tomorrow itself and treat her like your daughter. Be well”, He gave Prasadam and sent the Zamindar on his way.
