மஹாபெரியவாளின் அத்யந்த பக்தர்களில் கிருஷ்ணமூர்த்தி கனபாடிகளும் ஒருவர். வேதங்களை நன்கு கற்றுணர்ந்தவர். மஹானின் அருகில், சற்று எட்ட அமர்ந்து வேதபாராயணம் செய்துகொண்டு இருப்பவர். இப்போது அவருக்கு வயது எண்பத்தைந்துக்கு மேல் இருக்கலாம்.

பல வருடங்களுக்கு முன்பு மஹானின் அருகே அமர்ந்து சாமவேதத்தைப் பாராயணம் செய்து கொண்டிருந்தார். மஹான் வழக்கம் போல் பக்தர்களுக்கு ஆசியும் பிரசாதமும் வழங்கிக் கொண்டிருந்த நேரம். பக்தர்களின் வரிசை மெதுவாக நகர்ந்து கொண்டிருந்தது. அப்போது ஒரு பக்தர் கையில் சிறு பையுடன் வரிசையில் நின்று கொண்டிருந்தார். அவரது முறை வந்தபோது, மஹானிடம் ஆசிபெற்று பிரசாதத்தை வாங்கிக்கொண்டு அவர் நகர முயற்சித்தபோது, பெரியவாளின் குரல் அவரை நிறுத்தியது.

”எனக்குக் கொடுக்கணுமுன்னு கொண்டுவந்ததை கொடுக்காமே போறயே”

பக்தர் திடுக்கிட்டு நின்றார். அவரது கையில் இருந்த பையில் நெல்லிக்கனிகள். அவரது தோட்டத்தில் விளைந்த முதல் கனிகள் அவை… மஹானுக்குக் கொடுக்கவே அவர் கொண்டு வந்தார்.

“இங்கே ஆப்பிள், ஆரஞ்சு, மாதுளை, திராட்சைன்னு பல பழங்கள் கொண்டு வந்து தர்றா……. நான் சாதாரண நெல்லிக்காயையா பகவானுக்குத் தர்றது…..அதனாலே தான் கொண்டு வந்ததை எடுத்துண்டு போறேன்…”

ஒரு மூங்கீல் தட்டைக் காட்டி “அதில் நீ கொண்டு வந்ததை எடுத்துவை” என்று மஹான் உத்தரவிட, பக்தர் தன் பையில் இருந்த நெல்லிக்கனிகளை எடுத்து அத்தட்டில் பக்தியோடு சமர்ப்பிக்கிறார்.

கிருஷ்ணமூர்த்தி கனபாடிகளுக்கு ஒரே வியப்பு……. பக்தர் நெல்லிக்கனி தான் கொண்டு வந்து இருக்கிறார் என்று மஹானுக்கு எப்படித் தெரியும்?

அன்று துவாதசி….. மஹான் அக்கனிகளை விரும்பி ஏற்றுக்கொண்டதன் காரணம் இப்போது கனபாடிகளுக்குப் புரிந்தது.

ஆதிசங்கரருக்கு ஒரு நெல்லிக்கனியைக் கொடுத்தபோது, அவர் வாயிலிருந்து அப்போதே கனகதாரா ஸ்தோத்திரம் கிளம்பியது. இப்போது இவ்வளவு கனிகளை மஹானுக்கு சமர்ப்பித்த அந்த பக்தர் எந்த அளவுக்கு உணர்ந்திருப்பார் என்று கனபாடிகள் வியந்தார்…..

அண்மையில், மஹான் நெல்லிக்கனி பெற்ற விவரத்தை கிருஷ்ணமூர்த்தி கனபாடிகள், சேலம் பெரியவா கிரகத்தைச் சேர்ந்த ராஜகோபாலிடம் சொன்னார். துவாதசியன்று நெல்லிக்கனியை உண்பது எவ்வளவு விசேடமானது என்பதை மஹான் புரிய வைத்திருக்கிறார்.

இந்த நெல்லிக்கனி விஷயத்தில் மஹான் இன்னொரு அற்புதத்தையும் சேலத்திலேயே நிகழ்த்தியிருக்கிறார். இங்கே பெரியவா கிரகத்தில் மஹாபெரியவாளின் முதல் ஆராதனை மிகவும் விமரிசையாகக் கொண்டாடப்பட்டது. இதர பூஜை புனஸ்காரங்கள், அன்னதானம் போன்றவை சாஸ்த்திரப்படி நடக்க வெகு விமரிசையாக ஏற்பாடு செய்யப்பட்டிருந்தது. மஹானின் முதல் ஆராதனை. எனவே எல்லாமே வெகு விமரிசையாக நடக்க வேண்டும் என்பதில் யாருக்கும் சுணக்கமே இல்லை. அன்னதானம் செய்யப்படும் போது மஹாபெரியவாளுக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்த நெல்லிக்காய் ஊறுகாய், நெல்லிக்காய் பச்சடி போன்றவை வழங்க வேண்டும் என்று தீர்மானித்து நெல்லிக்கனியைத் தேடி சேலம் பூராவும் அலைந்தார்கள். அந்தக் கனிமட்டும் முதல் நாளும், ஜெயந்தியன்றும் யாருக்கும் கிடைக்கவே இல்லை. இதில் மிகுந்த மனக்கிலேசமடைந்தவர் ராஜகோபால்தான். எல்லாமே பரிபூர்ணமாக இருக்கும் போது இந்த நெல்லிக்கனி விஷயத்தில் மட்டும் குறை ஏற்பட்டு விட்டதே என்ற எண்ணம். மஹானின் விருப்பம் அதுவானால் அதை அப்படியே விட்டு விட வேண்டியதுதான் என்று அநேகர் சமாதானமடைந்து விட்டனர்.

பூஜைகள் ஆரம்பமாகி, வேதியர்கள் அமர்ந்து முறைப்படி எல்லாமே நடைபெற்றுக் கொண்டிருந்தது.

ஹால் நிறைய கூட்டம்.

அந்த நேரத்தில் பெரியவா கிரஹத்தின் வாயிலில் ஒரு நபர் வந்து நின்றார்.

அவரது கையில் ஒரு பை.

“நான் ராஜகோபால் மாமாவைப் பார்க்க வேண்டுமே” என்றார் வந்தவர்.

“அவர் பூஜை செய்யும் வேதியர்களுக்கு உதவிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறார். இப்போது அவர் இங்கு வர முடியாது”. இந்த பதில் கிடைத்தவுடன் வந்தவர் சற்று நேரம் தயங்கினார்.

“சரி, இந்தப் பையை அவரிடம் கொடுத்து விடுங்கள்” என்று அவர் தன் கையிலிருந்த பையைத் தந்தார்.

“யார் தந்ததாகச் சொல்வது?”

“சங்கரன்” என்று சொல்லுங்கள். பையைக் கொடுத்தவர் போய்விட்டார். அவர் கொடுத்த பையில் நிறைய நெல்லிக்கனிகள்! அங்கே இருந்தவர்கள் அடைந்த ஆனந்தத்திற்கு அளவே இல்லை.

இதில், முக்கியமான விஷயம் அந்த ‘சங்கரன்’ யார் என்றே இன்றுவரை ராஜகோபாலுக்குத் தெரியாது.

பக்தர்களின் மனக்குறையை எவ்வாறு பூர்த்தி செய்கிறார் என்பதற்கு இதை விட சான்று தேவையா?

Yaar antha Shankaran ?

Amongst Periyava’s most intimate devotees, Krishnamurthy Ganapadigal was one. He was a Vedic Pundit. He would sit a little distance from Periyava and do Veda Parayanam.

Now he would be more than 85 years old.

Many years ago, he was sitting near Periyava and doing Sama Veda Parayanam. Periyava was as usual giving His blessings and Prasadam. The line of devotees was moving steadily. Then, there was a devotee standing in line holding a small bag. When his turn came, he received the blessings and Prasadam from Periyava and started to move away; Periyava’s voice stopped him.

“Why are you going away without handing over whatever you brought for Me ?”

The devotee stood stunned. His bag contained gooseberries. It was from the first harvest in his field; he had brought it to give it to Periyava.

“People have brought fruits like apples, oranges, pomegranates and grapes; I did not want to submit something so ordinary like gooseberries to Bagavan. That’s the reason I walked away without handing it over”

Periyava pointed to a bamboo plate and ordered “Keep whatever you have brought on that”. The devotee took out the gooseberries from his bag and humbly placed them on the plate.

Krishnamurthy Ganapadigal was totally surprised; how did Periyava know that the devotee had brought gooseberries with him ?

It was Dwadashi on that day. The Ganapadigal understood the reason behind all this.

When Adi Shankara was given a single goose berry, out came KanakaDhara Stotram from His mouth. The Ganapadigal wondered what was in store for this devotee who submitted so many goose berries to this Mahan.

Later, Krishnamurthy narrated this gooseberry incident to Rajagopal who is associated with the Salem Periyava Griham. Periyava, by means of this incident, has illustrated how significant it is to eat gooseberries on a Dwadashi day.

Periyava has created another miraculous incident in Salem itself in the matter of gooseberries. Periyava’s first Aaradhanai was observed with a lot of celebrations in Periyava Griham. Other pujas, ceremonies and Annadanam, as laid down in the Shastras, had been arranged to be conducted in a grand fashion . It was the Mahan’s first Aaradhanai. So everybody’s wish was that everything should go off well. Since Periyava liked gooseberries, the organizers wanted to serve gooseberry pickles and gooseberry ‘Pachadi’ during the Annadanam and searched all over Salem for them. But nobody was able to find them either on the eve of the Aaradhanai or on the Aaradhanai day itself. It was Rajagopal who was upset most at this turn of events. When everything else was picture perfect, the fact that this remained unfulfilled caused him a lot of grief. However they consoled themselves saying that if this was how Periyava wanted it, then that is how it would be.

The pujas started; the vedic pundits began the proceedings as per the plan. The hall was filled to capacity.

At that time, a person came and stood in front the hall. He had a bag in his hand.

“I want to see Rajagopal mama”, he said.
“Right now, he is assisting the Vedic Pundits. He will not be able to come now”. Hearing this reply, the man stood there for a while, undecided.

“Ok then, please hand this bag over to him”, he gave his bag.

“Who shall I say gave this ?”

“Tell him it was ‘Shankaran’”. He walked away after handing over the bag. The bag was full of gooseberries ! The joy the people there felt was infinite !

To this day, Rajagopal has not been able to understand who this Shankaran was !

There can be no better illustration of the fact that Periyava always addresses the grievances of His devotees.
