“I believe the period in which I did service to MahaPeriyava is what has given meaning to my life”, says Pattabhi Sir, thrillingly.

What happened during a book-release function in which Periyava had come to participate ?
In the words of Pattabhi Sir….

Even though it used be one in the afternoon when Periyava usually had lunch, sometimes it used to go beyond 2-2:30. Never would Periyava have lunch before that.

After lunch, He would rest for 30-45 minutes, after which Periyava would give Darshan.

During that interval, I would speak with the people who had come to take His Darshan, and find out details on who had come, for what, etc. Periyava had a habit – he would speak with whoever had come to take his Darshan, only through a mediator. Babu, Kannan Mama or me – somebody or the other would be there.

Periyava was a very simple man. He had a child-like heart. But only those who knew Periyava’s real ability would speak to Him with a little fear; they would struggle to say what they really wanted to convey. Others would strggle to understand what Periyava was saying. We would be the people who would come to their aid.

A senior citizen, around 65 years old, from Ilanji village in what used to be Tirunelveli district, came. He owned a lot of cultivable land. He had a lot of love for Tamil. Apparently, he also learnt Sanskrit. He also spoke a few sentences in chaste Sankrit.

Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads and Vedas – these are said as ‘Prasthana Thrayam’. Acharya has also given a speech on this. It was a speech which articulated the principles of Advaitha !

That senior citizen from Tirunelveli had converted all of this into Tamil poetry form, printed a book and had brought it. He did a Namaskaram to Periyava and said “Periyava only should release this book”.

Periyava immediately ordered, “Ask him to come in front”. He also came in front. “Book releases should be done in A/C halls, in front of prominent ministers. Why me? Pattabhi, tell him !”

To that, that senior citizen said, “Please do not say like that. Periyava is everything. If Periyava releases the book, it is enough for me”

Periyava smiled on hearing that. “What are you going to do with this ?”, He asked him. Periyava was concerned that the Tirunelveli man should not incur a loss after having released this book !

“I’m publishing this book in the hope that i can distribute this book amongst the people who come to see Periyava”, said the senior citizen.

Periyava thought for a minute and said “Don’t we need to fix a price for the book ? Fix it at Rs 10″

The Tirunelveli man was overjoyed. His interpretation was that Periyava had accepted that book and he was thrilled !
He brought a book and offered it at Periyava’s Holy Feet.
Immediately, Periyava said like a child, “Pattabhi, can you give Me a 10 rupee note?”

That village rustic panicked. “Accepting money from Periyava ? That will be a great sin. No, No”

In the meantime, Periyava said to me, “Oh, how will you have money. You are the last person I should have asked for money. It is I who owes you money”, with a laugh. Then, there was a mami by name Pollachi Jayam mami. Most of the days, she used to be in the SriMatam itself.

Periyava said to the mami, “I have given my word and now I need to keep it. Give me a ten rupee note”. Mami immediately handed over the money. She was thrilled that Periyava had asked her for it and she was able to give it.
As I gave the money to Periyava, Periyava gave it to the old man. He then prostrated himself in front of Periyava. He touched the 10 rupee note to both his eyes. His face was radiant with joy.

What the Tirunelveli man had done was a great thing; a noble deed. Not only had he done the deed with dedication, not minding the strain involved, he had come all the way from his village to show it to Periyava and seek His blessings.

“He fully believed that ‘Periyava was everything’ and had come with full faith in Him. If, for any reason, he had been unable to meet Periyava, how disappointed he would have been!’

“That act of the senior citizen from Tirunelveli, of converting Advaitha philosophy in tamil poetry form, publishing a book and bringing it to Him had touched Periyava’s heart. Periyava must have felt that if the book was given away for free, people would just keep it aside without reading it. At the same time, He wanted to make sure that the villager did not incur any loss. That’s Periyava !”

Later, that villager went to the Kamakshi Amman and Ekambareshwarar temples and came back.

The next day, when the villager was going back to his village Ilanji, after having taken Periyava’s Darshan and blessings, his gait and face reflected the total joy in his heart !

  2. While this is a well know incident, there are a couple of factual errors in this narration.

    1. First and foremost, Sri Maha Periyava never would touch money with His own Divine Hands. While the article does not explicitly state that Sri Maha Periyava touched the ten rupee note, that sentence of Sri Maha Periyava “giving the ten rupee note” could have been clearer.

    2. Prasthanathrayam does NOT include Vedhas; upanishads, the Bhagavad-Gita and the Brahma Sutras are collectively referred to by that name.

Hara Hara Shankara! Jaya Jaya Shankara!

  3. Any chance of getting a copy of that great book?If bY chance that book is out of print reprinting can be arranged so that the great advaitha in chaste Tamil poems form will be a treasure in any house and can be given as gifts during functions in the family.Pl enlighten..
