வாழைத்தண்டு / Banana tree inner stem for skin diseases

The lady had only her son to support her and he was afflicted with a skin disease that spread rapidly all over his body. He had itching sensation everywhere and if he scratched it would start to bleed leaving large patches of bruise. The mother, like every one else, came to Maha Periyava.

‘I know no other refuge and cannot afford medical treatment. Maha Periyava should cure him’.

The Jagadguru asked them to stay in the mutt. He instructed the boy not to eat or drink anything, except His utchishta. He gave instructions to the kitchen attendants too about His bhiksha, which was the inner stem of the banana tree, boiled in water with some salt added to it. Maha Periyava would accept this as His bhiksha and then drink some butter milk. the leftovers of both were given to the boy.

Ten days later the itching and the darkness in the skin began to subside. as the days passed the skin was rid of the infection and became clear and healthy. after 40 days the skin regained its perfect health and the boy looked radiant. the mother of the boy was delighted.

‘I used to think that my son’s affliction of the disease was because of his past sins. now, I know that it was the merit of the good deeds of the past that gave him this infection. who could ever have the fortune of eating and drinking Maha Periyava’s utchishta for 40 days at a stretch?!

Maha Periyava, like always, said humbly ‘ it was all because of the medicinal qualities of the banana stem!’

Sri Maha Periyava Thiruvadigal Saranam.
