பெரியவாளுக்கு கொஞ்சம் உடம்பு சரியாக இல்லை. எந்த மோசமான உடல் உபாதையிலும் அவர் ஒருநாள் கூட தன் அனுஷ்டானங்களை விட்டார் என்பதில்லை; பூஜையை விட்டார் என்பதில்லை; ஏதோ சுருக்கமாக பூஜையை முடித்தார் என்பதும் இல்லை. நாமோ, “ஹச்”சென்று ஒரு தும்மல் வந்துவிட்டால் கூட, ஏதோ பெரிய வ்யாதி வந்த மாதிரி, குளிக்கக் கூட யோஜிப்போம்.
1945ல் பெரியவாளுக்கு ஹார்ட்டில் கோளாறு உண்டானது. மயிலாப்பூர் டாக்டர் T N கிருஷ்ணஸ்வாமி ஐயர் வந்து வைத்யம் பண்ணினார். பெரியவா கொஞ்ச நாள் பேசாமல் அவர் சொன்னதை கேட்டுக்கொண்டாலும், தான் பாட்டுக்கு “சிவனே” என்று தன் கார்யங்களைப் பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார். ஒருநாள் டாக்டரிடம்,
“நீ குடுக்கற அலோபதி வைத்யம் போறும்…” என்று நிறுத்திவிட்டு, பாரிஷதர் ஒருவரிடம் “மேலகரம் கனபாடிகளை அழைச்சிண்டு வா!” என்று உத்தரவிட்டார். கனபாடிகளைப் பெரியவாளுக்கு ரொம்ப பிடிக்கும். முதலில் அவரிடம் உள்ள வேதம்; அதோடு வைத்யம், ஜோஸ்யம் எல்லாம் அவருக்கு கை வந்த கலை! அவர் வந்தால் பெரியவா நேரம் போவது தெரியாமல் அவரோடு நிறைய விஷயங்களைப் பற்றி பேசுவார்.
கனபாடிகள் வந்து பட்டுத் துணி போர்த்தி, பெரியவாளுடைய நாடியைப் பார்த்தார்.
“ஒரு பஸுவுக்கு தெனோமும் நாகமரத்தோட தழையை [இலை] மட்டும் ஆகாரமாக் குடுக்கணும். பெரியவாளுக்கு, அந்த பஸுவோட பாலை மட்டும் குடுக்கணும்” என்றார்.
“செரியாப் போச்சு! எனக்கு ஒடம்பு செரியாகணுங்கறதுக்காக ஒரு பஸுமாட்டைக் கஷ்டப்படுத்தலாமா? நாகத் தழை மட்டும் அதுக்கு எப்டிப் போறும்? கோஹத்தி தோஷம் வந்துட்டா என்ன பண்றது?…” ரொம்ப கவலையோடு கேட்டார்.
(பஸுவுக்கு ஒரே மரத்தின் இலையை ஆஹாரமாகப் போடுவதையே பெரியவா கோஹத்தி என்றால், அன்றாடம் அந்த மஹாமாதாவை பாலுக்காகவும், மாம்ஸத்துக்காகவும், தோலுக்காகவும் கொடூரமாக வதைக்கும், வதைக்க அனுப்பும், மற்றும் அதோடு தொடர்பு கொண்ட மனிதர்கள் என்று சொல்லிக் கொள்ளும் மிருகங்களின் “கோஹத்தி” தோஷம் சித்ரகுப்தனுக்கும் எழுத முடியாத அளவு இருக்கும்.)
அதற்குள் பாரிஷதர்கள் “பஸுவை பட்னி போடலியே பெரியவா! நாக எலையை நெறைய போடலாம்…” என்று எதையோ சொல்லி, பெரியவாளை சம்மதிக்க வைத்தனர்.
பெரியவாளுக்கென்றே தன் உதிரத்தைப் பாலாக்கி பிக்ஷையாகக் குடுக்க அந்த கோமாதா செய்த பாக்யந்தான் எப்பேர்ப்பட்டது! பஸுவே ப்ரத்யக்ஷ தெய்வம். அவள் பாலமுதளித்து தெய்வத்துக்கே அம்மாவானாள்!
ஜம்மென்று நாகத் தழையைத் தின்று கொண்டு, நல்ல தண்ணீரைக் குடித்துக் கொண்டு சௌக்யமாக இருந்தாள் அந்த அம்மா! பெரியவாளும் அவள் தந்த பாலை மட்டுமே பிக்ஷையாக ஏற்று, மூன்று கால பூஜை, தர்சனம் என்று சௌக்யமாக இருந்தார்.
இதை பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருந்த பாரிஷதர்கள், பக்தர்கள் சிலர்,
“என்னத்துக்கு நமக்கெல்லாம் இந்த தண்டமான மனுஷ ஜன்மா, ஒண்ணுத்துக்கும் உபயோகமில்லாம? இந்தப் பஸுவா பொறந்திருந்தா…. இந்த ஜன்மா கடைதேறியிருக்குமே! பெரியவாளோட பிக்ஷைக்கு பாலைக் குடுக்க இந்தப் பஸு என்ன புண்யம் பண்ணித்தோ !..” என்று மனமுருகினார்கள்.
கொஞ்சநாளில் “குழந்தை” உம்மாச்சி தாத்தா தாயாரின் கவனிப்பினால், சொஸ்தமானார்.

We do have to appreciate those temple gurukkal/sivaachariya-s who so do abishekam with “Karandha Pal” only and not accept packet milk. For my “nithya Pujai” at my home I buy “Pasum Pal” from one guy locally in Adambakkam for the past 1 year.

Periyava was feeling a little under the weather. He would never stop performing His Anushtanams even in the worst of health; He would never stop his Pujas; He would never compromise on the elaborateness of His Pujas either. On the other hand, we would think twice of taking a bath even if we have a minor cold.
In 1945, Periyava had a heart problem. Mylapore Dr TN Krishnaswami Iyer was his physician then. For some days, even though Periyava was under his care, He would continue to perform His regular activities. One day, He told the doctor, ‘Enough with your Allopathy medicines’ and ordered a Parishathar there, ‘Bring Melagaram Ganapatigal to Me’. Periyava used to like the Ganapatigal a lot. He was a Vedic Pundit; additionally he was a physician and astrologer par excellence ! If he came to see Periyava, Periyava would keep talking to him for long durations.
The Ganapatigal came and after covering Periyava’s hand with a silk cloth, he checked His ‘Naadi’.
He said, ‘We need to keep a cow on a diet of only Naga Maram leaves. And we need to give its milk as diet to Periyava’
‘No way ! Just to cure me, we cannot make a cow suffer like this. How will it be able to live on just Naga Maram leaves ? What will I do if I incur “GoHatthi Dosham ?” ‘, He said with concern.
(If Periyava felt that feeding a cow only one kind of leaves itself amounted to GoHatthi, then what to say of the GoHatthi Dosham incurred by those who murder that MahaMatha for her milk, meat and skin and by those who abet it; Chitragupta will not even be able to write about it in his ledger )
The Parishathargal present there managed to somehow convince Periyava saying ‘We are not going to make the cow starve, Periyava ! We will give her lots of Naga Maram leaves…’
Just imagine the Bhagyam of that cow to give her milk as Bikshai to Periyava after having converted it from its blood ! Cow is Pratyaksha Deivam. By virtue of her milk, she is equivalent to the mother of God.
She was enjoying the Naga Maram leaves and water that was being fed to her ! Periyava too was accepting milk from her and performing his TriKaala Pujai and giving Darshan.
Seeing all this some Parishathargal and Bhaktas said ‘Why do we need this wretched human birth, which is of no use to anybody. If only we had been born as this cow ! I wonder what Punyam this cow did to give its milk for Periyava’s Bikshai !’
In a few days, due to the attention lavished on Him by that mother, the ‘Kuzhandai’ Umachi Thatha became healthy.

Athithyamdu, my tamil competence is poor. I will not be able to do justice. Even to do the translation from tamil into english, i have to refer to online tamil-english dictionaries. IN fact i had to refer to a dictionary to get the meaning of Katturai 🙂
