Following are Periyava’s words about what He learnt from His Madras trip! I had not been blessed to see his puja. However, I can only imagine that it would be a pin-drop silence when He did His puja. From this article, I could see that it wasn’t the case when He stayed in Madras! Looks like Madras has been noisy for centuries!!!!

The greatness of Periyava is to convert everything as a way to learn/enrich His sanyasa life and at the same time to teach us all the wonderful things…..

மெட்றாஸுக்கு வந்ததில் நானும் ஒரு பாடம் கற்றுக் கொண்டேன். மௌனத்தால் கிடைக்கிற சாந்த ஸெளக்யம் சாச்வதமாக நிலைத்து நிற்பது;அதாவது எத்தனை கஷ்டத்துக்கு நடுவிலும் கஷ்டம் தெரியாமல் ஆனந்தமாக இருக்கும்படிப் பண்ணுவது என்று சொல்கிறார்கள். கஷ்டமே இல்லாமலிருக்க வேண்டுமென்றால் முடியாது. கஷ்டம் இருக்கத்தான் வேண்டும். அப்போதுதான் கர்மா கழியும். ஆனாலும் அது கஷ்டமாகத் தெரியக்கூடாது. ஒரே ஒரு ‘அயிட்டத்’ திலாவது இதை நான் தெரிந்து கொண்டதற்கு மெட்றாஸ் வாஸம் ஸஹாயம் பண்ணியிருக்கிறது. இங்கே பூஜை பார்க்க வேண்டும் என்பதற்காக நீங்களெல்லாம் பக்தியோடு கும்பலில் தெரிந்து கஷ்டப்பட்டுக்கொண்டு மணிக் கணக்காகக் காத்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறீர்கள். பூஜை பார்க்கிறபோது இத்தனை கஷ்டமும் மறந்து உத்ஸாஹம் உண்டாகி பாராயணம், பஜனை என்று ஆனந்தமாக ஆரம்பித்து விடுகிறீர்கள். மற்றவர்களுக்கும் இது நல்லதுதானே என்ற நல்லெண்ணத்தில்தான் இப்படிச் செய்கிறீர்கள். ஆனால் இதனாலேயே ரொம்பவும் சப்தமும், distraction -ம் (கவனச்சிதறலும்) ஏற்பட்டு விடுகிறது என்று சில பேருக்குத் தோன்றவே, “Silence Please!” என்று அட்டைகள் எழுதி மாட்ட ஆரம்பித்தார்கள். நான் அவற்றைக் கழற்றிவிடச் சொன்னேன் ஏன்?’ இப்போதுதான் நமக்கு ஒரு பாடம் படித்துப் பாஸ் பண்ண ஸந்தர்ப்பம் வந்திருக்கிறது. இதை நழுவவிடக் கூடாது’ என்று நினைத்துத்தான் கழற்றச் சொன்னேன். ஈஸ்வராநுக்ரஹத்தில், இப்போது எத்தனை சப்தமிருந்தாலும் நான் பாட்டுக்குப் பூஜையைப் பண்ணிக் கொண்டிருக்கப் பழகி விட்டேன்.

அதனால் இன்று மௌனத்தைப் பற்றிப் பேசினது எனக்கு ஸெளகர்யமாகப் பூஜையின்போது நீங்கள் பேசாமலிருக்கும்படிப் பண்ண வேண்டும் என்ற உத்தேசத்திலல்ல. உங்களுக்கே அதன் பிரயோஜனம் ஏற்பவேண்டுமென்றுதான் சொன்னேன். இத்தனை நாள் உங்கள் இஷ்டப்படி பாடி, பேசி, பஜனை செய்தாகிவிட்டபடியால், இப்போது உங்களைப் பூஜையின்போது மௌனமாக மானஸிகமாகப் பிரார்த்தனை பண்ணிக் கொள்ளச் செய்வதில் நியாயமிருக்கிறதென்று தோன்றிற்று. சும்மாயிருக்கும் ஸுகத்தின் லேசமாவது உங்களுக்கெல்லாம் தெரிய வேண்டும் என்ற ஆசையில் சொன்னேன்.

I too have learnt a lesson after coming to Madras – the peace and tranquility that one gets by observing Silence lasts long. In other words, even amidst trials and tribulations it lets you live in joy without suffering. One cannot ask for a life without difficulties. Difficulties need to be there. Only then will (one’s) Karma diminish. But difficulties should not bog us down. My stay in Madras helped Me realise this. You people are undergoing a lot of difficulties by waiting for hours in this crowd just to witness the Puja. When you are witnessing the Puja, you forget all these difficulties and in your devotion and enthusiasm, start Parayanams and Bhajanais. You are doing all this in the belief that it is good for others too. But some people feel that this causes a lot of noise and distracts others and so put up boards with ‘Silence Please’ written on them. But I instructed these boards be taken down. Do you know why ? We have an opportunity to learn a lesson and pass an exam. I asked the boards to be taken down because we should not let this opportunity slip. With the grace of the Lord, I have now learnt to focus on my Puja even if there is a lot of noise (and distractions).

The reason I spoke about observing Silence today is not because I wanted you people to keep quiet during my Puja. I wanted you people to understand the benefits of Silence. All these days, you people have sang, done Bhajanais as per your wish; now I thought it is the right time to advise you to observe the Puja silently and pray silently. I wanted to let you know about the joy in observing Silence.
