Thanks Anu for typing and translation…..I admit that I made some changes to the translation. If it doesnt sound right, it is probably due to my part !!

Short but a powerful definition of the word sanyasi. If we apply this yardstick in today’s world, we will see hardly few people who qualify for this 🙂

As we advance in our pursuit for learning about the all-pervading athma (self), further progress is only possible when we abandon all our duties and become an ascetic or sanyasi. Atma is beyond the reach of karma. As we meditate on the self (atma vicharam), at some point, the karma of doing dhyana also is/should be ceased.  It is only at that stage can we realize the true self.  The idea of doing dhyana and karma together is impractical.

To free ourselves from the bond of relations we have to dedicate our lives. All ties of family, work and even our vedic duties have to be severed in this pursuit.

However we must keep one thing  in mind – our acharya has never said that anyone can become a sanyasi abandoning their prescribed duties. One needs a certain bent of mind and control over the self before embarking on the pursuit of the self.

  1. The Grahastha can and must do his duties and also help the Sanyaasi. Obviously, Sanyaasis will be very few in number as the qualifications required are very difficult to acquire. But the Sanyaasi’s Blessings will be universal which will benefit everyone. The True Sanyaasi can be found out if one feels Peace when we see Him or even think about Him. In that way, can we ever forget Maha Periyava, Bhagavan RamaNa and Sringeri Mahan Jagadguru Sri Chandrasekhara Bharathi Maha SwamigaL? Truly Blessed as His Bhakthas and Anukkath Thondars! Jaya Jaya Shankara, Hara Hara Shankara!

  2. as Periava Himself has advocated first of all ask the question who am i, mr. srinivas, are you sure you are srinivas if so how do you know etc. a very simple book who am i is available in ramana asramam, please read you may get some answer. i really mean it.

  3. Dear friend,
    Could you pls explain :

One needs a certain bent of mind and control over the self before embarking on the pursuit of the self.

    Thanks in advance

    • If I can explain, I am probably a sanyasi as periya defined. So clearly I am not – so I can’t explain.

If your concern is about the english translation, pl send the better version as opposed to challenging it. the way you asked the question, to me, sounds like it is challenging the translation work.pl understand that this blog is run for free, by volunteers. There are countless kind people who are providing support etc. after reading 1000s of periyava’s articles, at a minimum, we should learn not to hurt others’ feelings.

      Thanks

      Mahesh

      • Dear Mahesh,

I did not intend to challenge what was written or the way it was written. I only asked out of the curiosity to know the meaning.

If my language sounds sarcastic, i apologize to you and the other volunteers who are doing excellent job.

        Regards,
        Srinivas

  4. This is a beautiful and serene photograph of Periyava.

  5. Maha Periyava’s explanation is correct as far as formal Sanyasa is concerned. Lod Krishna, however, talks about house holder Sanyasi also in the Bhagavad Geetha chapter 6. Without forsaking family one can be a sanyasi if he has the proper mental attitude and attain liberation.

  6. Could not be explained in a better way. Hara Hara Sankara… Jaya Jaya Sankara

  8. .சித்த சுத்தி — to get how many re-birth we have to make and then becoming a Sanyasi — We could not follow the normal “Acharam and Anushtanam” — Where is .சித்த சுத்தி looks like million miles away — May be our Karuna Murthy — MahaPeriyava Padham Saranm help to get there.
