உலக புகழ்பெற்ற வழக்கறிஞர் திரு.என்.ஏ.பல்கிலாலா, பாரதநாட்டின் தூதராக அமெரிக்காவில் பணியாற்றுவதற்காகச் செல்வதற்கு முன் மகாபெரியவாளின் அனுக்ரஹத்தை பெற மிகவும் ஆசைபட்டார்.அதுவரை அவர் பெரியவாளை தரிசனம் செய்ததில்லை. அதனால் ஸ்ரீமடத்துடன் நீண்டகால தொடர்புடைய  நண்பர்களுடன் தரிசனத்திற்குச் சென்றார்.

அன்றைக்குப் பெரியவா மௌனம் ! நல்லகாலமாக காஷ்டமௌனம் இல்லை.அதனால் பல்கிலாலா சொன்னத்தையெல்லாம் தன் செவிகளால் கேட்டு ,அவ்வபோது சில சமிக்ஞைகன் செய்து ,செய்தி ,விபரங்களை அறிந்துகொண்டார்கள்.

“பெரியவா ஆசிர்வாதம் வேண்டும் , நான் நல்ல பெயர் எடுக்கணும்…” என்று வேண்டிக்கொண்டார்.

வழக்கமாக ஒரு கையை (சில சமையங்களில் இரு கைகளையும்) தூக்கி காட்டி ஆசி வழங்குவார்கள் மகாஸ்வாமிகள்.ஆனால் பல்கிலாலாவுக்கு ,தன் இரு கைகளின் கட்டவிரல்கள் ,ஆள்காட்டிவிரல்களை ஒன்றாக சேர்த்துக் காட்டி ஆசி வழங்கினார்கள்.(கட்டைவிரலுடன் கட்டைவிரலையும்,ஆள்காட்டிவிரளுடன் ஆள்கட்டிவிரலையும் சேர்த்து காட்டினார்கள். )

இதற்கு என்ன அர்த்தம்?

பெரியவா ஆசிர்வாதத்தில் பால்கிலாலாவுக்கு மகிழ்ச்சி தான். ஆனாலும் ஒரு நெருடல் இருந்து கொண்டே இருந்துது.

“பெரியவா காட்டிய செய்கைக்கு என்ன அர்த்தம்?” என்று எங்களையெல்லாம் கேட்டார்.

யாருக்கு தெரியும்? பெரியவாளுக்கு மட்டுமே தெரியும்! அவர்களை கேட்டால்தான் சரியான பொருள் விளங்கும்.

எங்கள் நண்பர்களில் ஒருவர், அடுத்த வாரமே பெரியவா தரிசனத்துக்குப் போவதாக சொன்னார்.”பெரியவா காட்டிய சைய்கைக்கு என்ன அர்த்தம் என்று கேட்டுக்கொண்டு வாருங்கள் …பாவம் பல்கிலாலா தவியாய்த் தவித்துகொண்டிருக்கிறார் என்று சொல்லி அனுப்பினேன்.

நண்பர் பெரியவா தரிசத்தின்போது, பல்கிலாலாவின் தவிப்பை தெரிவித்துகொண்டார்.பெரியவா புன்முறுவல் உடன் கொடுத்த பதில்.

உலகத்திலயே மிக பெரிய ஜனநாயக நாடுகள்,இந்தியாவும் அமெரிக்காவும் தான்.இவை இரண்டும் இனைந்து செயல்பட்டால், உலகத்துக்கே க்ஷேமம் ஏற்படும். இதை நினைவில் வைத்துக்கொண்டு ,அவ்வபோது நிலைமைக்கேறப் செயல்படணூம்னு அவருக்கு சொன்னேன்.

பால்கிலாலாவிடம் இந்த பதில் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டது.

ஒரு குதி குதித்தார் பல்கிலாலா , அவ்வளவு ஆனந்தம்!”எவ்வளவு பெரிய உபதேசம் ,எவ்வளவு பெரிய அணுக்ரஹம்!

பல்கிலாலா அமெரிக்காவில் அனைவராலும் விரும்பப்பட்ட பாரத அரசாங்கத்தின் தூதராக விளங்கினார் என்பது வரலாறு.

Once world famous lawyer Palkivala wanted to obtain Periyavaa’s blessings before embarking on his trip to America as India’s emissary. He had not had Periyavaa’s darshan till then. So a few of us (his friends) accompanied him as we used to go to the matam often.

The day we went Periyavaa was observing silence .Luckily for us , he still heard whatever Palkivala had to say and communicated with him using gestures.

“Periyavaa must bless me ,I must do well ….” requested Palkivala.

Usually Periyavaa used to raise his hand (sometimes both his hands) by way of blessing. However for Palkivala, his gesture for blessing was most unusual. He held both his thumbs and both his index fingers ( right thumb with left and right index finger with the left) and held it raised and blessed him.

Even though Palkilala was happy that he had been blessed , still the meaning of the gesture confounded him.

“What could be the meaning of the gesture shown by Periyavaa?” he asked us.

We were as clueless as he was.The meaning was known to Periyavaa alone and He alone could clear the confusion for us.

One of our friend was planning to go to Kanchipuram for having Periyavaa’s darshan the next week itself and I implored upon him to ask Periyavaa itself the meaning of the gesture and thus clear Palkilala’s dilemma.

Accordingly my friend told Periyavaa of Palkivala’s dilemma and requested him to clear the same. Smilingly Periyavaa said ” India and America are the worlds’ largest two democracies.If both the countries work together , it will benefit the entire world.I told him to carry on his work there keeping this in mind.

When Palkivala came to know of this his joy knew no abounds. He was touched by the loftiness of the message and the generosity of the blessing.

Palkilala completed his tenure as India’s emissary with accolades and honor.
