Thenambakkam is a very important place in the life of Periyava and needs no introduction. For some reason, I have not received the full blessings to see this place in proper lighting – only partial blessing 🙂 After I finished the visit @Mani mandapam and darshan of HH Kuvalaikkal Swamigal, I went here and it was already starting to get dark. On top of that, there was power outage to make it worse. I ended up taking photos with the flash on, which i hardly do.
- Most of you know the background of this place….particularly the room you see – it is probably a 10×10 room with one window intentionally built and Periyava stayed in this room for entire 1 year or so as I heard. Bikshai was given through the small opening on the left of the photo…A small Pillayar vigraham was carved out of a single stone and installed right opposite from this window so that Periyava can slide the opening and get darshan….There are multiple stories to why Periyava chose to stay this way. In fact the Shivacharyar of this place gave one explanation, which was different than what I heard etc. Anyway, He only knows why He did that….
- Secondly the well, famous well….In fact many of the folks I met have met Periyava here so many times….They have very beautiful memories of this place. All are expected to be on the other side of the well….When called by Him, some small boys jump over the well to get to the other side etc! Indra Gandhi, some foreign diplomats have visited Him right around this well…

- In one of the photos, you will see a staircase on the right (partially). I was told that Periyava took these stairs in the morning to see all the gopurams of Kanchipuram – Gopura darisanam koti punniyam.
Sorry folks for dark photos – next time, when I get a chance I will visit this place in a better sunlight….

On 19/5/19 i went to Thenam pakkam and one hour spent around the temple.I saw sri maha room and i did vishnu and lalitha sahasranamam parayanan.I fully satisfied to visit the temple

Indeed a great place to visit. When Indira Gandhi came to meet Periyavaa to stand in elections after emergency to seek His Blessings and sought His advise for party symbol, Periyavaa raised his hand and gave His Blessings. That’s how Indira Gandhi changed the symbol to hand.

we were fortunate to visit this temple site on 3 rd march 2017. A vidyarthi explained all the details including the small room where sri maha periava stayed there for nearly a year. we could feel the vibrations..sri maha periava charanam
i went there yesterday i.e 14.06.2015 at prathosham time and dharshan the god.
Unforgettable moments here for me because I was stayed 11 days.

சரணரை தரிசனம் செய்தவர்கள் மறு ஜன்மம் எடுக்க மாட்டார்கள். எடுத்தாலும் தரிசனம் செய்த புண்ணியம் கடந்த ஜன்ம நல்வாசனை கண்டிப்பாக வந்து விடும். அவ்வளவு புனிதமான தலம் தேனம் பாக்கம். ஏனென்றால் எதற்கும் கலங்காத காலம் தேவதை, நீதி தேவதைகளையே கலங்க வைத்து விட்டார் நம் சரணர். அபசாரம், அவர் பண்ணவில்லை. அன்னாருடைய தபஸ் எதற்கும், யாருக்கும் கலங்காத காலம்மற்றும் நீதி தேவதைகளையே வெகு அனாயாசமாக கலங்க வைத்து விட்டது.

எந்த தேவதைகள் சரணர் தன்னைத்தானே தண்டித்துக்கொண்டதை பார்த்தும் ஒன்றும் பண்ண முடியாமல் தவித்தனவோ (தபஸ் வலிமையால்) அந்த தேவதைகளே நம் எல்லாருக்கும் ரத்னகிரிஸ்வரர் விடியோ கிடைக்கும்படி, சரணரின் பக்தர்களை சரியான சமயத்தில் அங்கே கொண்டு வந்தது சரணிரின் திருவிளையாடல்தான் என்றால் மிகையாகாது. அது ஒரு தனி கதை.

எந்த ஸ்வாமியும், எந்த ஆசார்யரும் தன் பக்தன் செய்த எந்த மகா பாதகத்தை அப்போதைக்கப்போது மன்னித்தாலும் – கால தேவதையும் நீதி தேவதையும் – யார் பண்ணிய பாதகத்துக்கும் ஒரு நாள் இல்லை ஒரு நாள் தண்டனை கொடுக்காமல் விடாது. ஆனால் சரணர் அவர்கள் தன் பக்தனுக்கு நடந்த சோகத்துக்கு – அதுவும் அந்த பக்தன் சரணர் சொல்லியும் கேட்காமல் தப்பு பண்ணியும் – சரணர் தன்னைத் தானே தண்டித்துக்கொண்டு,தேனம்பாக்கத்தில் தண்டனையை அனுபவித்தது, எந்த கல் நஞ்சக்காரனையும் கதறச்செய்யும் போது, தப்பு பண்ணியவர்கள் தண்டிக்கபடாமல் சரணர் தண்டனையை ஏற்றுக்கொண்டபோது கலஙகின, அத்தேவதைகள்.

Such precious photos Mahesh. We have read and heard so many incidents that have occurred around this well. Now to see them in pictures is simply priceless.
Very nice to see Thenambaakkam today. Maha SwamugaL Vigraham Prathishtai is there and seen in the last two photographs. I did not get an opporrtunity to see Maha Periyava in Sivaasthaanam, which is the proper name of Maha Periyava’s abode then. It is located in the village of Thenambaakkam. The Siva Temple there is called Sri Brahmapureeswarar Temple and one should not miss the Vigrahas of Sri Dakshinamurthy, in smiling pose and Sri Adi Sankarar and Veda Vyasar! Jaya Jaya Shankara, Hara Hara Shankara!
Yes, Shivacharyar mentioned about smiling Dakshinamurthy and he took the deepam closer to the face. I got a great darshan. But I thought that all dakshinamurthis are smiling everywhere. Fact of the matter is I never observed Dakshinamoorthy that closely….

ALL THESE STRUCTURES WERE NOT THERE AT THAT TIME…….IT WAS JUST A SUN SCORCHED SMALL HUT WITH A WELL IN FRONT……CENTURIES OLD APPEARANCE…..now feel, I should have resigned my job in April 1978 when I was transferred out of Kancheepuram…and stayed for daily darshan of His Holiness…..Regret a lot now….but what is past is past….
THANK YOU VERY MUCH SIR, FOR THIS PHOTO…..HOPE YOU CAN POST MANY MORE PHOTOS…OF THIS PLACE…..I TOO WAS VERY BLESSED IN HAVING DARSHAN AT THIS PLACE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WELL…..1977 SEPTEMBER TO 1978 MARCH………..I USED TO HIRE A CYCLE FOR 6 PAISE….ONE HOUR…FOR ONE ANNA OF OLD COINS….THEN SLOWLY PEDAL BEHIND A TOWN BUS…..BY THETIME I MANAGE TO REACH TENAMBAKKAM, THE BUS WOULD BE ON ITS RETURN TRIP AND HIS HOLINESS WOULD BE FREE AND STANDING ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WELL….THOSE MEMORIES ARE FADING….YOUR PHOTO HAS REVIVED THEM…..AT THAT TIME, THERE WAS ONLY A HUMBLE HUT THERE, AS THE ABODE OF HIS HOLINESS……..
